Job description

Welcome to Planet. We believe in using space to help life on Earth.

Planet designs, builds, and operates the largest constellation of imaging satellites in history. This constellation delivers an unprecedented dataset of empirical information via a revolutionary cloud-based platform to authoritative figures in commercial, environmental, and humanitarian sectors. We are both a space company and data company all rolled into one.

Customers and users across the globe use Planet's data to develop new technologies, drive revenue, power research, and solve our world’s toughest obstacles.

As we control every component of hardware design, manufacturing, data processing, and software engineering, our office is a truly inspiring mix of experts from a variety of domains.

We have a people-centric approach toward culture and community and we strive to iterate in a way that puts our team members first and prepares our company for growth. Join Planet and be a part of our mission to change the way people see the world.

Planet is a global company with employees working remotely world wide and joining us from offices in San Francisco, Washington DC, Germany, Austria, Slovenia, and The Netherlands.

About the Role:

The Automated Mosaics team is responsible for producing Planet’s Mosaic (or “Basemap”) products . We combine image processing and engineering expertise to create spatially and temporally consistent views of Earth at a global scale. Our products are used by the entire range of Planet’s customers, including commercial, civil government, defense and intelligence, research, and nonprofit applications. Our data products are used in applications such as Global Renewables Watch , deforestation monitoring, ecosystem monitoring, and permit enforcement. Our tools are also used by other teams at Planet in the creation of their own products. Engineers on the Automated Mosaics team partner with other teams at Planet who maintain compute infrastructure, acquire and QC data from our satellites, and process individual images.

As a Software Engineer on the Automated Mosaics team, you will play a key role in maintaining and improving Planet’s Mosaic products. You will improve the mosaicing algorithm to provide better data for our customers. You will ensure that data production scales reliably and efficiently to the global scale of our products. You will own the systems which decide which data to produce and when.

This is a full-time, remote position based in Canada (B.C., Alberta, Ontario).

Impact You'll Own:

  • Maintain and improve the image processing algorithms which create Planet’s Mosaic products.
  • Ensure that data production runs reliably and efficiently at global scale.
  • Ensure that data requested by our customers is available when needed.
  • Collaborate with teams both upstream (handling individual image acquisition and processing) and downstream (delivering data to customers or using mosaic machinery for other Planet products) to ensure high image quality and smooth delivery.

What You Bring:

  • 4+ years of experience in a related field
  • Proficient in scientific Python development
  • Familiarity with image processing methods or with geospatial algorithms and data
  • Experience running workloads at scale in production
  • Excellent written communication skills to support asynchronous remote collaboration
  • Experience with collaborative coding tools such as GitHub or GitLab
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn new skills as needed

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Experience working with satellite imagery
  • Experience with logging, alerting, and monitoring tools for software
