Job description

Software Engineer - APIs & Automation @ Merchkit
Build Seamless Connectivity in AI-Native Commerce Infrastructure
The Opportunity

We’re hiring a Software Engineer focused on APIs and automation to build the connective tissue between Merchkit and the wider commerce ecosystem. From building robust integrations with commerce systems, marketplaces, ERPs, CMSs, and others, to architecting flexible workflow systems within our own AI-Native PIM (Product Information Management System), you’ll shape how data flows, transforms, and syncs across platforms - either via agentic AI triggers or user-defined actions.

You’ll own how we move, transform, and activate data: whether that means building atop a unified API layer or constructing bespoke ETL pipelines that support high scale and complex logic.

This role is at the heart of our customer promise - helping brands unify their product data, automate updates, and power the experiences they want across every tool they use.

What You’ll Build
  • Integrations: Build and maintain robust, scalable integrations into third-party platforms (e.g. Shopify, Netsuite, Salsify, Segment, etc.) through unified APIs or direct connectors

  • Internal Systems: Design and own the internal architecture for managing integrations and data sync logic, including queuing, retry logic, and failure handling

  • Workflow Engine: Help define and implement our PIM’s workflow system—a flexible automation layer that lets customers trigger logic based on AI or manual inputs

  • Sync Logic: Architect systems to push and pull data reliably between Merchkit and destination tools with transformation layers and schema mapping

  • Data Infrastructure: Contribute to the overall data pipeline design and ensure consistency and reliability across syncs, events, and workflows

What We’re Looking For
  • Integration-Focused Engineering: You’ve built and maintained API-based integrations, data sync services, or workflow engines before

  • ETL / Data Pipelines: You’re comfortable designing systems that move and transform large volumes of data between platforms

  • Platform Thinking: You consider reliability, developer experience, and customer configuration when designing systems

  • Modern Stack Comfort: You’re familiar with tools like Unified, Alloy, Trigger.dev, Inngest - or have opinions about when to build vs. buy

  • AI-Curious: You’re excited to explore how agentic AI systems can participate in - or even lead - automated workflows

  • Customer-Obsessed: You build with empathy for the real people trying to make these workflows run smoothly

Why You’ll Love It Here
  • Founding Impact: Help define what integrations and workflow systems look like at a high-growth, AI-first startup

  • Equity & Ownership: Substantial equity (0.1–1%) and a real seat at the table, plus competitive salary ($150-200K)

  • Learning & Autonomy: Work directly with technical founders, ship quickly, and make key technical decisions

  • Location: Join us in Toronto or Vancouver with a hybrid setup

  • Culture: We value clear thinking, high trust, and thoughtful execution

What’s Next?

If you’re excited about:

  • Building the systems that connect the modern commerce stack

  • Shaping AI-powered workflows in a real production environment

  • Being part of a thoughtful, technically rigorous founding team

…then we’d love to talk.

Our Interview Process

1. Initial conversation with founders

2. Technical deep dive or sample project to work on together

3. Final team conversation and offer

At Merchkit, we believe diverse teams build better products. We welcome applications from everyone, regardless of background.
