Job description

Canonical is a leading provider of open source software and operating systems to the global enterprise and technology markets. Our platform, Ubuntu, is widely used in breakthrough enterprise initiatives such as public cloud, data science, AI, engineering innovation, and IoT. Our customers include the world's leading public cloud and silicon providers, and industry leaders in many sectors. The company is a pioneer of global distributed collaboration, with 1200+ colleagues in 75+ countries and very few office-based roles. Teams meet two to four times yearly in person, in interesting locations around the world, to align on strategy and execution.

The company is founder-led, profitable, and growing.

This is an exciting opportunity for an exceptional software engineer passionate about open source software, Linux, and Web Services at scale. Come build a rewarding, meaningful career working with the best and brightest people in technology at Canonical, a growing international software company.

Canonical's Store team develops and operates a large system of backend services that power the Snap Store and Charmhub.io marketplaces. Our services are built primarily in Python, with some components in Golang.

We have exciting challenges ahead, including scaling our production architecture, expanding the range of software delivered through our marketplaces, and enhancing our offerings for IoT and large enterprise solutions.

If you are passionate about clean APIs, have a bias towards shipping, and believe in automated tests for higher velocity and reliability, you'll fit right in.

What you'll do
  1. Collaborate remotely with a globally distributed team.
  2. Write clean web service APIs to support CLI and web frontend clients, using Python (and optionally Golang).
  3. Design and implement new features and enhancements from specification to production and ongoing operations at scale.
  4. Review code and technical designs produced by other engineers.
  5. Discuss ideas and collaborate on finding good solutions.
  6. Work remotely with global travel for 2 to 4 weeks for internal and external events.
Who you are
  1. You have demonstrated professional proficiency in developing public-facing APIs and web applications using Python.
  2. You have a broad technology base but favor backend code and infrastructure.
  3. You are familiar with relational and non-relational databases and can design data models that perform well and tune queries effectively.
  4. You are comfortable with Ubuntu as a development and deployment platform.
  5. You have demonstrated strong academic performance in Computer Science, STEM, or a similar degree.
  6. You love technology and working with a diverse set of talented people.
  7. You are curious, flexible, articulate, and accountable.
  8. You value soft skills and are passionate, enterprising, thoughtful, and self-motivated.
