Job description

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Software Development Manager based in Canada.

Overview

Join a fully remote team developing innovative fleet management software that helps businesses optimize vehicle maintenance, improve operational efficiency, and keep fleets running safely. In this hands‑on leadership role, you will guide a team of software engineers while remaining actively involved in coding, architecture, and technical decision‑making. You will oversee the entire software development lifecycle, from roadmap planning and sprint execution to deployment and production reliability. Working closely with Product, Customer Experience, and executive stakeholders, you will translate business needs into scalable, high‑quality software solutions. You will help shape cloud‑native applications, modernize technical practices, and strengthen integrations across a growing technology ecosystem. This opportunity combines people leadership, technical ownership, and strategic influence in a collaborative, high‑trust environment. If you are passionate about mentoring developers while building production‑grade software, this role offers the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on the future of fleet management and logistics.

Accountabilities
  • Lead and develop the engineering team: Manage, mentor, and coach software developers, fostering technical excellence, accountability, collaboration, and continuous professional growth.
  • Own software delivery: Oversee delivery planning, sprint execution, release management, and prioritization to ensure reliable, timely, and high-quality software releases.
  • Drive technical strategy and architecture: Make architectural decisions, establish engineering standards, promote maintainable code, and guide the development of scalable, secure, cloud‑native applications.
  • Contribute hands‑on to development: Write and review production code across backend and frontend systems, particularly within AWS‑based environments and integrated software platforms.
  • Manage production reliability: Oversee incident response, troubleshoot operational issues, improve system observability, and implement practices that strengthen performance, availability, and resilience.
  • Collaborate on product strategy: Partner with Product and other stakeholders to define roadmaps, clarify requirements, align technical priorities with business objectives, and deliver solutions that address customer needs.
  • Strengthen engineering practices: Improve automated testing, code reviews, CI/CD pipelines, deployment processes, and release quality to support efficient and dependable delivery.
  • Develop integrations and data capabilities: Design and maintain integrations with third‑party platforms, APIs, analytics tools, and event‑driven systems that support fleet management and operational intelligence.
  • Champion continuous improvement: Evaluate emerging technologies, including AI‑enabled development practices, and introduce improvements that increase team productivity and software quality.
Requirements
  • Professional experience: At least 5 years of hands‑on software engineering experience developing production applications and 3 or more years managing and coaching software engineers.
  • Education: A bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Cloud infrastructure: Practical experience with AWS services such as EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, and CloudWatch.
  • Containerization and orchestration: Proficiency with Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Backend and frontend development: Experience with .NET or Node.js for backend development and React and TypeScript for frontend applications.
  • Software architecture: Strong understanding of API‑first design, scalable application architecture, third‑party integrations, security best practices, and event‑driven systems.
  • Agile delivery: Experience leading Agile/Scrum processes, including sprint planning, execution, release coordination, and delivery management.
  • Production operations: Demonstrated experience with incident response, system reliability, troubleshooting, monitoring, and continuous operational improvement.
  • Product collaboration: Ability to work closely with Product stakeholders to define requirements, establish technical priorities, and align delivery with business goals.
  • B2B SaaS experience: Background developing and maintaining software products in a business‑to‑business SaaS environment.
  • Technical ecosystem familiarity: Knowledge of CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions or AWS CodePipeline, automated testing, and deployment automation.

  • Industry knowledge: Understanding of telematics, IoT, GPS data streams, OBD‑II, CAN bus, electronic logging devices (ELDs), or fleet management systems is an asset.
  • Leadership and communication: Strong mentoring, problem‑solving, communication, and decision‑making skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with developers, executives, and cross‑functional teams.
  • Ownership and adaptability: A proactive, hands‑on mindset, a commitment to engineering quality, and the ability to take responsibility for technical outcomes and production performance.
  • Additional assets: Bilingual proficiency in English and French, or Canadian government security clearance.
