Your Opportunity

Stantec has an opportunity for an intermediate Socio-Economic Specialist to join our Environmental Services team in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. The successful candidate will support socio-economic impact assessment and related work across various industries.

This is an exciting time for socio-economic impact assessment, driven by new legislation that mandates equal attention to both adverse and positive effects, as well as the inclusion of diverse sub-populations in assessments. Stantec’s industry-leading socio-economic team is responding to these opportunities, and we’re looking for a new team member to join us. The ideal candidate will bring a strong interest—and some experience—in socio-economic analysis, particularly in areas such as economic, employment, and business impacts. Experience in planning, monitoring, and managing socio-economic effects is also valuable.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct research to collect socio-economic baseline information, particularly related to economy and labor
  • Participate in research programs involving workshops, focus groups and meetings, telephone and in-person interviews, and surveys
  • Support proposal, technical, and report writing
  • Work within established budgets, work scopes, and deadlines
  • Promote a strong health and safety culture and actively participate in Stantec’s Health, Safety, Security and Environment Program

Your Capabilities And Credentials

  • Familiarity with Canadian national, provincial and territorial environmental assessment guidelines, legislation and regulations
  • Experience researching or assessing the socio-economic impacts of resource development and infrastructure projects
  • Familiarity with socio-economic-related sub-disciplines (e.g., economy, employment and business, community infrastructure and services, land and resource use, community health)
  • Interest in diversity and inclusion, including gender issues
  • Demonstrated technical writing, presentation, and communication skills
  • Knowledge of resource-based projects, particularly in the mining and energy sectors
  • Familiarity with quantitative and qualitative analytical methods used to support socio-economic assessments, such as demographic modelling, input-output analysis and gender-based analysis plus (GBA+)
  • Proven interpersonal and collaborative skills, with the ability to engage effectively across Stantec and with a diverse range of audiences and technical backgrounds—including internal teams, external clients, and regulatory agencies.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis packages and programming/application (i.e., Beyond 20/20)

Education And Experience

Bachelor’s degree in human geography, economics, sociology, anthropology, resource management, environmental science, planning, or related social sciences discipline required

Master’s degree an asset

Minimum Of Five Years’ Experience

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.

Pay Range

  • Locations in PEI - Min Salary $ 67,200.00 - Max Salary $ 97,500.00

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
