Social Worker (MSW), Mental Health Crisis - Full-Time

Department: Mental Health - Crisis Team

Location: Kingston (Westbrook / Cataraqui Woods / Cedarwood)

Hours: 12 hour Traditional Shift rotation, 8am-8pm

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Program Manager, the Social Worker is responsible for offering a full range of client-centred clinical services. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, supporting patients and their families experiencing crisis, completing clinical and risk assessments, providing consultation and collaboration, coordination, education, providing advocacy, referral and/or facilitating discharge planning and liaising with community partners. Working as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, the Social Worker promotes the role of community treatment and collaborates with community resources to help meet the mental health needs of the individual. The Social Worker works in accordance with BGH policies and the regulations of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW).

Requirements:

Education/Specific Training Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in social work from an accredited post-secondary institution.
  • Registration with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW)
  • Valid Class G Ontario driver’s license and current vehicle insurance in good standing as working with community partners may be required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience completing risk assessments.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in providing trauma informed care preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to on-going learning and professional development as evidenced by participation in programs, courses, seminars that enhance skills and knowledge.
  • Current BCLS and CPR certification.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Prevention and Intervention Training required.

Experience and Knowledge:

  • Minimum of 3 years of previous mental health experience preferably in crisis, or emergency department.
  • Proven ability to conduct bio-psycho-social assessments; risk assessments, suicide prevention, advocacy and referral required.
  • Demonstrated crisis intervention skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in providing social work services, including treatment methods such as individual, group and family therapy, to persons with an acute and/or severe mental illness, and trauma informed care.
  • Knowledge of Mental Health Inpatient and Mental Health community-based resources for children, youth, and adults with mental health disorders.
  • Experience providing a range of evidence-based therapy modalities, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Brief Solution Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behavioural Therapy, Interpersonal psychotherapy, MBT, trauma-informed therapy, motivational interviewing and crisis intervention/management.
  • Specific knowledge of social work theories and practices to develop, implement and evaluate treatment/rehabilitation plans.
  • Demonstrated competency to administer naloxone in emergent situations.
  • Experience providing support and leading debriefs following a crisis or trauma is an asset.
  • Extensive knowledge of and skills in working with individuals with various types of dementia and other mental illnesses.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation including, but not limited to, The Mental Health Act, The Social Work and Social Service Work Act, 1998, The Regulated Health Professionals Act, The Substitute Decisions Act, The Health Care Consent Act, and the Personal Health Information Protection Act.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of the OCSWSSW.
  • Knowledge of psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment methods.
  • In-depth knowledge of community resources, programs and agencies available to clients and families.
  • Experience working in a computerized environment including use of Microsoft Applications.
  • Participates in research and continuous quality improvement.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity and awareness of the stigma frequently experienced by persons carrying a psychiatric diagnosis.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering culturally diverse environment and 2SLGBTQ informed care environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, critical thinking and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent time management, organizational and prioritization skills as relates to patient care.
  • Excellent attendance and availability required.
