Job description

Abiona Centre (“the Centre”) is an award-winning, accredited Children’s Mental Health Centre that is a multi-service, non-profit, unionized, community agency located in the east end of Toronto. The Centre is committed to nurturing empowerment, independence and growth for young pregnant and parenting women, children and families in a non-judgmental, inclusive environment by providing a residential care and treatment program; supportive transitional housing; on-site high school program, community housing support and referral services; and maternal infant mental health programs and services. We do this by working collaboratively as a multi-disciplinary team with community partners to provide holistic programs and support that respond to mental health, education and transitional needs. The Centre also operates an EarlyON Child and Family Centre and an Early Learning Centre. All the programs and services are open to families, young women and their children living in the broader community.

The Social Worker - MIMH will engage pregnant and parenting young mothers in a variety of psychotherapeutic interventions with the goal to improve their ability to transition into parenthood and manage relationships with their children, family and friends while promoting growth in all life domains.

The Social Worker - MIMH is part of the MIMH team, which is collectively responsible for providing a variety of parenting and early childhood interventions for families with children 0 to 6 years old, in the community and those enrolled in other Abiona Centre programs at Broadview, 1900 Sheppard and Humewood Campuses.

The Social Worker - MIMH is a team player who can provide single session client consultation, short or long-term counselling / psychotherapy and crisis intervention either in an office setting (virtually or in person) or in the community. The Social Worker - MIMH assures that the family voice is integral to service and provides leadership in collaborating with other programs at the Abiona Centre and community agencies and referral sources throughout the client’s course of treatment.

Term: Permanent Full-time

Rate of Pay: $55,340 per annum

Department: Maternal Infant Mental Health (MIMH)

Reports to: Manager, Infant & Early Mental Health

Qualification:

  • A Bachelors Degree in Social Work or equivalent, and eligible for independent practice of the Control Act of Psychotherapy in Ontario.
  • Registered in good standing with The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers.
  • Certificate in Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health or equivalent is an asset.
  • Minimum 3 years experience in infant, child, youth or parenting counselling and psychotherapy.
  • In- depth knowledge/ understanding of the issues affecting the intersections of young women and their infants.
  • Experience performing advocacy work within a variety of systems such as child welfare, the legal system, housing, healthcare etc.
  • Experience working with racialized pregnant and parenting youth. Knowledge of prenatal, postnatal, and early parenting needs.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills in infant and early childhood mental health and development.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft, Outlook, TREAT , or the navigation and use of client databases.
  • CPI training will be an asset.
  • Proficiency in French language is an asset.

Working Condition:

  • 40 hours/week Monday to Friday 9 am to 5 pm with some evening or weekend work as needed.
  • Regular travel to work sites might be required, meeting with clients on site, in the community, or virtually.
