Job Summary And Requirements

This is an until–filled competition. Candidates are encouraged to submit their applications promptly, as the posting may close at any time after 10 business days with a 24-hour notice. Resumes will be screened regularly until the position is filled or the competition closes. This posting will fill 2 permanent full-time positions working 75 hours bi-weekly and establish a 12-month eligibility list for similar roles.

Location: Based in Whitehorse, Yukon, a thriving and diverse city.

Who We Are

Yukon's Department of Health and Social Services aims to promote, protect, and enhance the well-being of Yukon residents through accessible, quality health and social services. The Family and Children's Services Branch manages territory-wide child protection services, responding to complex and crisis situations, working collaboratively with Yukon First Nations and Indigenous Governing Bodies. The unit also provides 24/7 on-call services for child harm concerns.

This Opportunity

Reporting to the Supervisor of Family Services, the Child in Out-of-Home Care Social Worker provides services to children in out-of-home care, including assessments, case and cultural plan development, and coordination with families, Indigenous bodies, and service providers. The role requires a passion for children's services, strong interpersonal, organizational, and cultural sensitivity skills, and a commitment to relationship-based social work.

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Social Work degree
  • Relevant experience in child protection services
  • Experience with case and safety planning, court documents, and intervention services
  • Experience working with families and children, including referrals and service coordination
  • Experience with First Nation Governments and communities is an asset

Note: Degrees obtained outside Canada must be assessed for equivalency through ACESC members.

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License or equivalent
  • TB screening, WHMIS 2015, degree verification, and ability to be delegated under the Child and Family Services Act within 12 months

Job Requirements

  • Exposure to emotionally challenging situations, including mediating and de-escalating conflicts
  • Travel within Yukon and outside the territory as needed
