Job description

Shkaabe Makwa is seeking a First Nation, Inuit or Métis person for a full-time, permanent Social Worker 2. Reporting to the Manager, Workforce Development, the Social Worker 2 designs, develops and maintains training presentation materials, facilitator and learner guides as well as facilitates training around mental health, harm reduction, substance use, counselling skills and other community needs.

Working with a team of internal collaborators and external partners, the Social Worker 2 leads the design, development and delivery of high quality training curriculums and materials that are directly informed by community knowledge and culture-based clinical practice. The Social Worker 2 participates in the design, development and delivery of a range of online content including, but not limited to, websites, webinars, blogs, communities of practice and the overall Learning Management System. The Social Worker 2 contributes to programmatic and organizational support services, such as provincially-directed or community-initiated systems work as well as knowledge exchange and research activities. This position is located at 1001 Queen Street West and requires regular travel throughout Ontario, including remote First Nations communities.

This position requires the incumbent to be First Nations, Inuit or Métis. The successful candidate will possess a Master's Degree in Social Work and be a registered member in good standing with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. The candidate will have three (3) or more years of clinical experience in the treatment of mental health, substance use problems and/or concurrent disorders.

The candidate will be experienced in delivering effective trainings, presentations and group facilitation both in person and virtually. Other requirements include a thorough understanding of principles and practices of Indigenous engagement along with demonstrated community connections. Advanced knowledge of the impacts of intergenerational trauma, mental health assessment, treatment, intervention, group facilitation skills as well as superior verbal presentation and written communication skills are required. The incumbent will also demonstrate adaptability, flexibility, diplomacy and tact.

The incumbent will have a thorough understanding of the health, mental health and social service sector, government programs and current legislation that may affect Indigenous clients. Ability to read, understand and analyze research and grey literature and explain findings to non-academic audiences. Demonstrated success working and collaborating with interdisciplinary teams on team-based projects. Experience and ability integrating adult learning principles into curriculum design and training facilitation. Understanding of various learning delivery models including online, blended, classroom-based, synchronous and asynchronous learning environments. Excellent planning and time management skills, with ability to multi-task, produce and coordinate projects to tight deadlines. Developed interpersonal communication skills including experience developing and maintaining partnerships and networks of significant numbers of internal and external partners. Knowledge of copyright legislation, APA style rules and copyright issues. Bilingualism in French/English or an Indigenous language would be an asset.
