Job Overview

The Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) is looking for someone in Vancouver, BC to help grow digital engagement on our social media and websites. The social and digital content specialist will be responsible for supporting the digital engagement team with a variety of digital activities, including social media and digital content. You’ll be working in a hybrid capacity in Vancouver, helping us capture local footage and event content, while supporting our fundraising activities, program services, and helping us create a safe and supportive online community. This cross-functional role will be split between social media (60%) and digital content (40%) with fluctuations as required by the needs of the organization.

In this role, you’ll be creating social media assets for our Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, and LinkedIn pages, and helping manage an editorial calendar for our national social media presence. You’ll work with the content development team to plan and execute different pieces of social media content (e.g. interviews with stakeholders or storytellers). You’ll also be supporting digital content creation and review as part of this role, helping tell our stories on cancer.ca. You'll be part of a team that writes, schedules, reviews, edits and publishes blog content in English sometimes collaborating with other teams. The successful candidate will work collaboratively across the digital engagement team and many other teams at CCS, helping organize, ideate, execute, and analyze all kinds of digital and social media content.

You’re someone who loves to think of innovative, digital-first ways to tell stories, and you’re passionate about quality, taking pride in the way you write and develop content.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Part of your role will include on-site event participation in Vancouver and content capture at and around the office when needed. Our social media team is constantly looking for opportunities to bring more local, personal angles to our National social media pages, and you’ll be our West Coast presence.
  • Support with the development of an ongoing social media content calendar that outlines what we share across our channels.
  • Ideation of content based on the organizational priorities (e.g. sharing stories of our impact, cancer information, stories and content related to our signature events, like Run for the Cure and Relay For Life).
  • Meeting with larger editorial planning groups to help brainstorm ideas for visuals, formats, and engagement techniques that help our content perform strongly across all social media channels.
  • Participate in reviewing social media performance, including at the conclusion of campaigns, helping identify areas of opportunity for improvement.
  • Developing visual assets for our social media channels, including vertical-first content with native features for Instagram stories.
  • Staying up to date with social media and digital content trends, including competitors and platform best practices, and using those trends and best practices to come up with innovative and creative ideas to increase engagement and grow our audiences.
  • Work with teams across the organization to coordinate content creation for a range of topics and goals. You’ll talk to teams across the organization to source imagery, key messages, and information related to social media and blog posts that align with organizational priorities.
  • Ensure brand consistency and high-quality writing across various digital channels.
  • Optimize content for paid social media, search engines and lead generation when needed.
  • Supporting with blog writing for campaigns and research communications as needed.
  • Support with scheduling story components and elevating our blog page on cancer.ca.
  • Participate in reviewing digital content performance and helping identify areas of opportunity for improvement.
  • Working closely with the digital content and UX teams to make recommendations for how we share content on cancer.ca in a compelling, engaging way.
  • Contribute to our culture of justice, belonging, equity, diversity, and inclusion by ensuring that all staff feel represented and heard regardless of their gender, age, religion, ethnicity, and nationality or race.

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education such as a college diploma, certification, or 1-3 years of related professional digital content experience, either directly with a brand or with an advertising or marketing agency, including experience writing and content creation for web and social.
  • Professional experience with digital platforms, a robust understanding of social media platforms, and a keen understanding of best practices and innovation is a must.
  • Storytelling and creativity, particularly when it comes to social media content calendar planning. We’re looking for someone who’s strong at capturing content on the go (e.g. for Instagram stories), but who is also a creative thinker when it comes to planning ahead and coming up with new, interesting ways to tell our stories.
  • A strong writer. This role will involve writing for many different digital platforms and attention to detail as well as a passion for storytelling is a must.
  • Professional experience using creative software to produce social media visuals. Experience with Canva is preferred but proficiency with Photoshop, InDesign, Lightroom, or Illustrator is also acceptable. Experience with video creation/editing is an asset.
  • A strong understanding of social media and digital marketing, including search engine optimization (SEO), writing for mobile, AODA compliance.
  • Proven working experience in social media and digital content creation.
  • A self-starter – the successful candidate will be passionate about bringing our stories to life online, and will be constantly looking for new, innovative ways to do so. Proactivity and creative thinking is a must.
  • Deadline-driven multi-tasker with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent communicator and creative thinker, with an ability to use both data and intuition to inform decisions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to operate in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Ability to work as a team player and demonstrate personal initiative to complete the work.
  • A team player who values an environment of open communication and collaboration.
  • Bilingual (English and French) is an asset due to the scope of the organization being nationwide.
