Job description

Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon

J903496 Saint John Negotiable

You were made to save animals. We take care of the rest.

Are you a passionate Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon looking for an exciting opportunity, a diverse caseload, and a genuinely supportive work-life balance?

Join the team at a leading emergency and referral veterinary hospital in Newfoundland & Labrador, located just outside St. John's. As the province's only specialty referral centre, we offer an exceptional opportunity to work on a varied, challenging caseload while providing advanced care close to home.

A unique opportunity in a unique setting

Our hospital provides comprehensive emergency and referral services across surgery, rehabilitation, internal medicine, diagnostic imaging and critical care.

As the only specialty centre of its kind in the province, our clinicians see an exciting and diverse range of cases. With no comparable referral centre on the island, you'll have the opportunity to develop your expertise, manage complex cases and make a real difference to pets and their families throughout Newfoundland & Labrador.

Our commitment is simple: expert care, close to home.

We provide advanced services including chemotherapy, a canine blood donor programme and a fully staffed 24-hour ICU. The hospital is also undergoing expansion, creating exciting opportunities for continued growth and the introduction of additional services.

About the role

We are looking for a Board-Certified Small Animal Veterinary Surgeon to join our enthusiastic and collaborative team.

Veterinary Surgeons who are currently completing their residency and are, or will soon be, board eligible are also encouraged to apply.

You’ll work alongside highly skilled Registered Veterinary Technicians, veterinary assistants and colleagues across multiple disciplines. Our approach is collaborative, patient-focused and centred on delivering the highest standards of veterinary medicine.

The ideal candidate will be:

  • Passionate about surgery and delivering exceptional patient care
  • Personable, confident and client-focused
  • An excellent communicator with strong interpersonal skills
  • Comfortable managing complex cases and communicating treatment options clearly
  • Collaborative and enthusiastic about working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Self-motivated, positive and keen to continue learning and developing
  • Committed to building strong, long-term relationships with clients and colleagues
  • We believe the best results come from bringing together excellent patient care, outstanding client service and a positive team culture.

Exceptional surgical facilities and support

You’ll have access to an impressive range of advanced equipment and resources, including:

  • Storz arthroscopic and laparoscopic equipment
  • C-arm imaging and compatible operating tables
  • Harmonic Scalpel
  • Aesculap battery-operated orthopaedic drills and saws
  • Standard and locking orthopaedic implants
  • Comprehensive in-house laboratory services staffed by Registered Medical Laboratory Technologists
  • Dedicated canine rehabilitation services
  • Large rehabilitation gym
  • Underwater treadmill
  • Therapeutic laser, TENS and therapeutic ultrasound
  • In-house 32-slice GE CT
  • 1.5T MRI

You’ll also have the support of a dedicated team of highly skilled veterinary professionals, allowing you to focus on delivering exceptional clinical care.

Work-life balance matters

This is a fast-paced and stimulating environment, but we believe that sustainable veterinary careers require a healthy work-life balance.

Our schedules are designed to minimise fatigue, and teamwork is at the heart of how we operate. You’ll be joining a close-knit team that genuinely supports one another, both professionally and personally.

And when you’re off the clock, Newfoundland offers an incredible lifestyle.

Explore spectacular hiking trails and outdoor adventures, go whale watching, discover historic sites or enjoy the vibrant downtown scene in St. John's, with outstanding restaurants, arts, culture and a welcoming social community.

What you’ll need

  • Board certification in Small Animal Surgery or board eligibility
  • A licence, or eligibility for licensure, to practise veterinary medicine in Newfoundland & Labrador
  • A strong commitment to client education and relationship-building
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary veterinary team
  • Enthusiasm, energy and a positive attitude
  • A genuine passion for veterinary medicine and patient care

What we offer
