Job Title: Sleep Study Technician
Performs diagnostic sleep studies related to the evaluation and treatment of patients with sleep disorders.
Minimum Qualifications
- Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
- Graduate of a CoARC-accredited School of Respiratory Care with an Associate of Applied Science in Respiratory Therapy.
- West Virginia Registered Respiratory Therapist or applicable state licensure. Complete a Sleep Technology Approved Resource (STAR) Program & obtain certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist within 2 years of employment.
- Certification in CPR.
- Experience: One (1) year of Polysomnographic experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current certification as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT).
- Clinical Sleep Educator Certificate from the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists.
- One (1) year of Sleep Study scoring experience.
Core Duties and Responsibilities
The following are general responsibilities and may include other duties:
- Perform high-quality polysomnograms.
- Utilize proper testing montages to detect abnormal sleep architecture, EEG/EKG abnormalities, respiratory events, and low oximetry.
- Perform equipment pre- and post-testing, including impedance checks and calibrations, recording in patient's records.
- Obtain consent for Video Taping, Filming, Photography, and Polysomnogram.
- Complete Pre- and Post-sleep Questionnaires.
- Document patient's sleep problems and procedural details.
- Identify sleep hygiene issues and record appropriately.
- Chart clinical notes for physician interpretation, including actions taken and comfort measures.
- Maintain event logs documenting patient interactions during sleep testing.
- Label, file, and store medical data and test results according to policies.
Physical Requirements
Must be able to:
- Stoop, kneel, stand for extended periods, lift, carry, push, and pull objects and patients of various weights.
- Operate sleep lab equipment requiring eye-hand coordination, finger dexterity, and visual concentration, including night vision.
- Communicate effectively, understand instructions, and complete technical reports.
Working Environment
The sleep lab environment includes:
- Normal office setting with possible machinery vibrations.
- Potential exposure to mechanical or electrical hazards, blood, body fluids, and infectious diseases.
- Operating the sleep lab requiring eye-hand coordination, finger dexterity, and visual concentration.
Skills and Abilities
Effective communication and understanding instructions to report patient information, explain procedures, and complete technical reports.
