Job Description

RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF THE MUHC

The Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) is a world-renowned biomedical and hospital research centre. Located in Montreal, Quebec, the Institute is the research arm of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine at McGill University. The RI-MUHC is supported in part by the Fonds de recherche du Québec - Santé (FRQS).

Position Summary

Under the supervision of the Manager of the Technical Platforms of the Center for Innovative Medicine (CIM), the incumbent conducts 2-3 polysomnographic recordings on research subjects per night, following research protocols. This includes diagnostic recordings, therapy administration (e.g., positive pressure therapy), equipment calibration, data analysis, and related tasks such as breathing and stress tests or assisting during bronchoscopy procedures.

General Duties

Overnight Testing Procedures

  • Review patient documentation and study protocols,
  • Interview patients to assess health status, medications, sleep patterns, and treatment needs,
  • Communicate with investigators regarding patient information,
  • Explain procedures to patients,
  • Measure and record patient demographics and physical measurements,
  • Set up and calibrate monitoring equipment,
  • Apply EEG, EKG, EMG, and EOG electrodes using standard systems,
  • Attach sensors for airflow, respiratory effort, oximetry, and body position,
  • Install specialized equipment like esophageal balloons or CO2 monitors as needed,
  • Perform calibrations, verify patient maneuvers, and record data,
  • Manage data acquisition and analysis software,
  • Document observations and events,
  • Identify and troubleshoot equipment issues,
  • Ensure patient comfort and safety during sleep studies,
  • Handle electrodes, sensors, and hygiene procedures,
  • Generate preliminary reports and log observations,
  • Administer therapies such as O2, CPAP, or BIPAP as per protocol.

Data Analysis

  • Score sleep stages and recognize EEG phenomena,
  • Differentiate micro and movement arousals,
  • Identify and categorize sleep-disordered breathing events,
  • Recognize other physiological events like PLM, snoring, and cardiac events,
  • Summarize and archive data,
  • Transfer data to databases.

Patient and Equipment Safety

  • Respond to medical events, ensure safety, and handle emergencies,
  • Move and lift patients safely,
  • Maintain infection control and sterilization procedures,
  • Handle hazardous materials properly.
