Description:
The Skilled Trades Teacher is responsible for teaching and providing support to students within the South Shore Regional Centre for Education. The Teacher will work within the Inclusive Education Policy framework by participating in individualized program planning with school staff and families to maximize learning experiences for students. The Skilled Trades Teacher will create an experiential learning environment rich in safety following the Safety Protocols for Skilled Trades and Technology Education.
Qualifications and Experiences:
Certified Journeyperson/Red Seal status in a designated trade as defined by the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act.
Valid Nova Scotia Teaching License is preferred and/or a valid Vocational Teaching Certificate (VTCII) will be considered.
Recent occupational experience in the skilled trades industry.
Understanding of the 70 skilled trades occupations designated under the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act for certification and/or apprenticeship in Nova Scotia.
Experience with skilled trades and career exploration.
Ability to create and foster a safe working environment/classroom in correlation with the Safety Protocols for Skilled Trades and Technology Education and in compliance with industry standards and best practices for safety.
Working knowledge and understanding of proper PPE use and tool/material management in the realm of construction trades.
Understanding of experiential learning through student learning experiences and equitable, balanced assessment.
Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor students or equivalent experience as a trainer in industry.
Ability to network, collaborate, and engage with community partners to enrich learning experiences for students.
Willingness to support underrepresented groups in skilled trades and related learning.
Experience managing large quantities of building supplies, materials, and tools/equipment using a designated budget.
Responsibilities:
Delivery of instruction to students enrolled in the Skilled Trades suite of courses.
Designing engaging experiential learning opportunities for students aligning with EECD curriculum.
Engagement with community partners, industry partners, mentors, skilled trades coaches, SSRCE regional staff, and the EECD Career Pathways team to support student learning.
Evaluate students performance, mentor and guide students, and maintain currency within your occupational field;
Engage in professional learning and collaboration with the support of the SSRCE Youth Pathways Consultant.
Required to create and maintain a safe learning environment using the Safety Protocols for Skilled Trades and Technology Education in conjunction with industry safety standards.
Must be willing to upgrade professional educational skills as necessary.
Other related duties as assigned.
