Job Description :

Shared Health is accepting applications for the position of Site Medical Lead, Surgery at the Health Sciences Centre (HSC). The HSC Site Medical Specialty Lead for Surgery is responsible for coordinating the delivery of quality surgical care at HSC.

The HSC Site Medical Specialty Lead, Surgery reports to the HSC Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and oversees medical services within their specialty. They collaborate with other medical specialty leads at the site and coordinate with Provincial Medical Specialty Leads to maintain standards of practice across the province. They also liaise with university academic programs to support teaching and research activities where appropriate.

Responsibilities :

  • Development and Implementation : Contribute to and support the implementation of provincial and regional strategies, including:
    • Provincial Clinical and Preventive Services Plan (CPSP): Support local implementation in Surgery, in collaboration with the CMO and PMSL.
    • Models of Care: Support new models of care at the local level.
    • Metrics: Monitor indicators like service performance, patient outcomes, and physician workload within a quality improvement framework.
  • Corporate Management : Participate in budget development and monitoring to optimize resources.
  • Clinical Services : Provide leadership in Surgery at HSC, including:
    • Standards of Practice: Support development and consistent application of clinical standards.
    • Quality and Safety: Promote quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
    • Interdisciplinary Practice: Encourage team-based care approaches.
    • Patient Access & Flow: Optimize patient care pathways within the Surgery program.
    • Liaison: Address clinical practice concerns.
    • Respectful Workplace: Foster a collaborative environment.
  • Health Human Resources : Lead recruitment, retention, and development of surgical staff, participate in provincial HR strategies, vet privileges, plan coverage, and conduct performance evaluations.
  • Stakeholder Engagement : Keep surgical staff informed about policies and program updates.
  • Academic Mission : Collaborate with educational and research institutions to support academic activities.
  • Other : Attend bi-monthly Surgery Clinical Operations meetings with HSC Executive.
