Job description
Overview

Description of the position: Assists with the overall operations of the Solid Waste Management site, including assisting the public with required documentation, operating weigh scales, maintaining and keeping the site tidy and in order.

Contract & Schedule

Contract Length: December 1 2025 - April 25 2026

Shift: Monday & Saturday 8:15am - 4:45pm

Responsibilities
  • Operate electronic weigh scales and assist with assessment and collection of tipping fees.
  • Maintain all required landfill and transfer station documentation, compost logs, daily disposal sheets, etc.
  • Process daily bank deposits.
  • Interact effectively and professionally with customers and contractors in a positive and courteous manner, including conflict resolution.
  • Remove contaminants from divertable materials.
  • Assist with Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Depot operations, including accepting materials from customers, placing material, and/or bulking materials appropriately within the HHW depot.
  • Operate computer scales and debit/credit machines; troubleshoot and resolve technical problems (e.g., computer, debit, or printer).
  • Operate small equipment (e.g., skid steer, lawn mower, weed eater, tire de-rimmer, snow blower).
  • Direct customers to place incoming waste material in appropriate diversion areas on site.
  • Clean up and package materials in all diversion areas, including but not limited to: clean wood, contaminated wood, brush, compost, metal, tires, drywall, shingles, blue box materials/cardboard, HHW and electronics, mattresses, and organics.
  • Perform maintenance and cleanup of other duties as assigned (e.g., grass cutting, litter picking, snow removal), including redeployment in emergency situations.
  • Operate in compliance with provincial and County occupational health and safety legislation, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Education, Technical Skills & Certifications
  • High school diploma. Educational equivalency may be considered in accordance with County Policy.
  • Good writing, mathematical, and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated computer experience in a Windows environment is an asset.
  • Must be able to deal with the public in a courteous manner.
  • Must be able / willing to work Saturdays regularly.
  • Valid G Class Driver’s license and access to reliable transportation to and from site(s).
  • Criminal Records Check that is less than six months old at time of hire.
Experience
  • Knowledge of waste management facilities and practices.
  • Experience in dealing with the public.
  • Cash handling experience.
Effort
  • Ability to lift up to 20 kgs.
  • Walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting, climbing, carrying and/or pulling of items.
Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to inclement weather, garbage, noise, foul odors, extreme temperatures, dust, dirt, etc.
