Signals and Communication Technician Job Summary

The Signals and Communication (S&C) Technician is responsible for handling calls in relation to S&C equipment, Engineering, and train operations.

Major Responsibilities

  1. Handle calls from the Rail Traffic Controller (RTC), S&C, Engineering, CN Police, and the public in relation to S&C equipment, Engineering, and train operations.
  2. Call handling includes prioritizing, troubleshooting, monitoring alarms, obtaining field updates, and escalations.
  3. Other duties include testing, inspecting, maintaining, installing, repairing, and all other work pertaining to S&C/RTC equipment at the RTCC and EG Communication Centre, Scotford Yard BRP facility, and work assignments as directed by Walker S&C Supervisors.

Working Conditions

  1. Must be available to work night shifts (19h00 to 07h00) and weekends when necessary (every second weekend).
  2. Must be available to travel for 3 consecutive weeks to our Winnipeg Campus to complete initial training.
  3. Must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress.

Requirements

  1. Previous railroad experience is an asset.
  2. Electrical or Telecommunications Diploma is an asset.
  3. Fluent in English and in French, written and verbal.
  4. Must have a valid Driver’s License.
  5. Must successfully complete a technical exam to qualify as a S&C technician before hiring.
  6. Has a strong understanding of S&C policies, procedures, and systems.
  7. Communicates with impact (excellent interpersonal skills).
  8. Applies critical thinking.
  9. Solves problems to create value.
  10. Identifies potential safety and security risks.
  11. Collaborates with others and shares information.
  12. Demonstrates agility and drives change.
  13. Ability to follow instructions and regulations.
  14. Must be able to complete a pre-employment medical that includes a physical, vision, hearing, alcohol, and drug audit assessment.
  15. Must successfully complete criminal history check, reference check, education, and Driver’s License verification.

Training

The incumbent would need to attend and pass (80% or higher) all 4 levels of the Apprenticeship Training Program (ATP).

This position is a unionized position. As such, pay and benefits are governed by the applicable collective agreement.
