PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

Signals & Communications (S&C) Helpers are part of a high-performing team responsible for laborious tasks related to the construction and maintenance of railway signal systems. During the training phase, candidates are classified as S&C Helpers, and upon completing their training, they become eligible to apply for a Signal Maintainer Apprentice position. The work is often seasonal, and employees may face layoffs at the end of the work season. However, they are recalled based on operational needs and seniority for the following season.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Perform trenching, cable distribution, housing installation, pole line work, and the assembly and wiring of signal equipment
  • Install ground systems and electrical connections to rail, ensuring system reliability and functionality
  • Inspect, repair, or replace damaged S&C equipment as needed
  • Work closely with Track Renewal groups to protect and maintain S&C equipment during projects
  • Conduct moderate to heavy physical labor on assigned sections of track, including tasks such as shoveling and climbing poles for pole line repairs
  • Walk and work on uneven terrain to ensure proper installation and maintenance of equipment
  • Report and document the color and status of signals during electrical connections

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or general equivalency
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Electronics/Electrical training and/or experience is an asset
  • Valid driver’s license: Commercial driver's license is preferred
  • Available to work all types of shifts, including nights, weekends and holidays in all weather conditions
  • Proficient in communication (ability to provide clear and concise instructions/directions)
  • A strong emphasis is placed on adhering to safety protocols and maintaining vigilance to ensure a safe working environment for yourself and your team
  • Must have ability to relocate within District 3 (Swift Current, SK and Thunder Bay, ON.)

Medical and Drug Testing

This is a safety sensitive position and a successful pre-employment medical assessment including physical, vision, hearing, and a negative company drug test is required. Post hire qualification drug testing may also be required.
