CAMPUS: Thunder Bay (Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, PACI Building)

TERM: August 25, 2025, to March 29, 2026

REPORTS TO: Executive Director (ED)

HOURS: 35 hours/week, Monday to Friday; weekends/evenings as required

COMPENSATION: $19.50/hour plus benefits

The Side Bar Supervisor is a detail-oriented, service-focused individual responsible for

overseeing all aspects of LUSU’s Side Bar canteen. The Supervisor will lead daily operations,

menu planning, and community engagement while ensuring a safe, inclusive, and welcoming

environment for students and campus guests. This role requires a hands-on leader with a

passion for food service, student life, and revenue growth.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Canteen Oversight and Supervision:

  • Supervise day-to-day operations of the Side Bar canteen, ensuring a clean, welcoming, and student-centred environment.
  • Develop a general menu with daily and seasonal specials, in collaboration with LUSU’s Outpost Head Chef, based on customer feedback and revenue trends.
  • Oversee inventory management: ordering, stock control, and waste reduction.
  • Monitor cash handling procedures, including till balancing, daily deposits, and financial tracking.
  • Submit payroll hours and assist the ED in reviewing sales data and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Ensure the venue complies with all legal, fire code, food safety, and health regulations.
  • Coordinate minor maintenance and facility improvements as needed.
  • Support event execution in the space, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and capacity limits.

Customer Service and Food Preparation:

  • Prepare and serve coffee, beverages, and food with a focus on friendliness, efficiency, and professionalism.
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service and ensure a welcoming atmosphere for students and campus guests.
  • Resolve customer concerns and complaints promptly and respectfully.
  • Assist with cleaning, organizing, and maintaining a sanitary environment in accordance with health standards.
  • Contribute to menu testing, presentation, and food quality assurance.

Marketing and Promotion:

  • Work with LUSU’s marketing team to promote the canteen and its events.
  • Help identify sponsorship or promotional opportunities with campus and community partners.

Miscellaneous Responsibilities:

  • Assist in venue renovations and interior design improvements.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, faculty, and university departments.
  • Manage office-related tasks, such as purchasing supplies and handling deliveries.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 1 year of experience in food service or hospitality. Supervisory experience is an asset.
  • A valid Safe Food Handling Certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Knowledge of health and safety and public health regulations.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including some evenings and weekends.
  • Familiarity with basic social media and promotional strategies.
  • Comfort with physical aspects of the role (standing for long periods, lifting boxes, etc).
  • Enthusiasm for working in a student-focused and equity-centred environment.
