Job summary

Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is seeking a Firmware Engineering intern/co-op in Vancouver, BC. You will contribute to firmware for AMD’s discrete and embedded products, working with experts across design, development, and delivery.

The program offers hybrid or onsite work, with 4–8 month terms across Winter, Summer, and Fall sessions. You will craft and validate features on reference hardware and pre-silicon environments, participate in reviews, and learn AGILE processes.

Qualifications

• Enrolled in a Canadian university pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field.
• Knowledge of C/C++ and low-level firmware development.
• Experience with embedded systems and RTOS.
• Understanding of hardware architectures and HW/SW debugging.
• Familiarity with source control and debugging tools (Perforce, Git, JIRA).
• Willingness to work in a hybrid/onsite co-op for 4–8 months.
• Eligible to work in Canada as a student.

Responsibilities

• Craft, implement, debug, and validate firmware features on reference hardware and pre-silicon environments.
• Participate in design and code reviews, and project planning.
• Build clear documentation for software produced during the internship.
• Work on internal and external platforms and apply AGILE methodologies.
• Involve in firmware development for x86 and embedded systems, including Bootrom/HW aspects.
• Collaborate across hardware and software teams to diagnose and root-cause FW/HW issues.

JOB DETAILS:

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada

Onsite/Hybrid: This role requires the student to work full time 37.5 hrs a week, either in a hybrid or onsite work structure throughout the duration of the co-op/intern term.

Winter Duration:

• 4 Months: January 11, 2027 to April 23, 2027


• 8 Months: January 11, 2027 to August 20, 2027

Summer Duration:

• 4 Months: May 3, 2027 to August 20, 2027


• 8 Months: May 3, 2027 to December 10, 2027

Fall Duration:

• 4 Months: September 13, 2027 to December 10, 2027

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

We are seeking highly motivated Firmware Engineering intern/co-op to join our team and work with team members in the support, design, development, and delivery of Firmware for AMD’s discrete and embedded products. In this role –

• We will assign you responsibilities to craft, implement, debug, and validate features on reference hardware and software, pre-silicon emulation and simulation environments supporting AMD products.


• We will encourage to actively participate in design reviews, code reviews and project planning.


• We will train you to build and complete clear documentation for all software produced.


• We will provide opportunity to work on both internal and external platforms.


• We will help you learn and apply AGILE methodologies and standard processes for Software Engineering.


• You may be involved in one or more (but not limited to) of the following work -


• Engage in x86 firmware development using C.


• Design, Build and Implementation of Embedded Firmware + Bootrom/HW.


• Debug issues at the boundary of FW and HW. We will have your involvement in Waveform level analysis to root cause FW/HW issues.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR:

• Currently enrolled in a Canada based University into a Bachelor's degree program majoring in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.


• If you have knowledge / experience with any of the following technical skills (or related areas) and are enthusiastic about this role, we strongly encourage you to apply –


• Low level BIOS, firmware, or system software development.


• Low level programming language C/C++ and knowledge of hardware architectures.


• Embedded system, RTOS, and embedded controller structure.


• Source control, debuggers, compilers and system wide debugging from software to firmware to hardware.


• Opensource concepts.


• VHDL/Verilog/FPGA and general hardware design concepts and process.


• Linux development environments.


• Architectural understanding and/or experience of graphics/compute pipelines.


• Perforce, JIRA, Git, or similar tools.
