Disney Cruise Line (DCL), a division of The Walt Disney Company, operates a six-ship fleet of premium class cruise liners and is the industry leader in family vacations at sea. DCL Entertainment (Toronto) is a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company Canada and serves as the rehearsal headquarters for DCL’s award-winning theatrical productions. Within a state-of-the-art entertainment rehearsal facility, DCL’s production teams pride themselves on creating memorable family entertainment that is both enchanting and magical – delighting the young and young at heart with legendary Disney storytelling.

Based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, reporting to the Director, Artistic Operations, the Shipwide Resident Director will oversee existing “Shipwide” entertainment offerings (theatrical, sketch comedy, improvisational / immersive), leading a Disney Cruise Line Toronto creative team and partnering with the production group in accomplishing the ongoing remounts of DCL “Shipwide” entertainment product.

Responsibilities :

  • Manage a creative team of Disney professionals, including scheduling, performance feedback, coaching, growth, and development.
  • Teach and direct staging / motivation, choreography, and Disney Character development for performers involved in Shipwide productions, including theatrical dining, deck parties, theme nights, and other Disney entertainment events.
  • Direct actors and singers in various live performance styles, focusing on sketch comedy, improvisation, and immersive experiences.
  • Oversee show projects from conception to production, providing artistic direction.
  • Participate in creative stages such as idea generation, script development, and casting.
  • Lead rehearsals and ensure performance excellence and sustainability.
  • Foster Disney Cruise Line’s culture of relevancy and belonging.
  • Collaborate with the Production Manager on cast-related issues and oversee casting and tracking of Disney characters and actors.
  • Partner with Disney professionals, including WDI Creative Directors, Show Directors, Choreographers, and others.
  • Maintain Disney creative standards, including show quality and character integrity.
  • Provide feedback to production teams and performers.
  • Participate in leadership team meetings to meet creative and production goals.
  • Travel as needed for cruises and rehearsals.
  • Assist in managing and planning rehearsals with the Toronto team.

Qualifications :

  • High School diploma or equivalent; post-secondary education preferred.
  • At least 10 years in live theatrical entertainment, including acting, vocal, and choreography.
  • 5 years of leadership in a fast-paced entertainment environment, ideally Disney or similar.
  • 3+ years as a Theatrical Director, preferably for Disney or similar.
  • Proven expertise in musical theater, sketch comedy, immersive experiences, and technical theater.
  • Ability to motivate and mentor creative professionals.
  • Commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Fluent in English; Spanish is a plus.
  • Proficiency in computer applications like Excel, Word, Outlook, Keynote.
  • Willingness to travel internationally and adhere to maritime regulations.
  • Flexible with production schedules, including weekends and long days.
