Job description

Canam currently has a new opportunity for a permanent full-time Shipping Assistant at our steel joist and deck manufacturing plant in Mississauga, ON.

The role of Shipping Assistant is varied and relies heavily upon good organizational and administrative skills. Your daily tasks will include responding to customers or shipper’s questions or, in some cases, complaints.

Responsibilities include:

  • Prepare bills of lading; check items to be shipped against orders to ascertain that quantities, destination, and routing are correct.
  • Maintain the department database, prepare routine reports, and file shipping records.
  • Plan loads in expedition software per shipping date, level load, forecast and report necessary capacity week to week.
  • Coordinate with production planning to ensure material is produced as required.
  • Confer with project managers to coordinate production and shipping activities, and to resolve complaints or eliminate delays.
  • Dispatch external carriers, request permits and escorts as required.
  • Contact customers in reference to shipping and/or delivery inquiries.
  • Coordinate with internal purchasing department for incoming materials to be received.
  • Maintain trailer inventory and logs.
  • Communicate and facilitate with customers and various internal departments for the purposes of scheduling and shipping as per project requirements.
  • Follow established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, control standards.
  • Provide back-up and vacation coverage to other department personnel.
  • Maintain work area and equipment in a clean and organized condition.
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Three to four years’ experience in a transportation or shipping administrative coordination role.
  • Adept at multitasking and prioritizing based on urgency, and possess strong attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate exceptional English language skills to communicate verbally and in writing with internal and external customers.
  • Computer skills are essential, with experience in Microsoft Windows and Google Suite applications.
  • Proficient data entry and accounting skills and an interest in learning new in-house applications.
  • Capable of working in an open-format office in a team environment is essential.
  • Possess an outgoing, friendly, and patient personality as well as a professional approach.
  • Have a team-oriented work ethic and a strong commitment to organizational values.
  • Punctuality, maturity, reliability and the ability to work well under pressure with frequent interruptions, while delivering exceptional customer service, are essential to excel in this role.
