Responsibilities
Tasks
- Command and operate ships or vessels to transport passengers and cargo
- Supervise and co-ordinate activities of deck crews
- Command and operate coast guard vessels
- Ensure safety and comfort of passengers
- Determine geographical position using navigational instruments, maps and charts
- Direct and oversee the loading and unloading of cargo
- Maintain vessel's navigational instruments and equipment
- Control, steer and navigate a vessel in various waterways
- Enforce regulations in Canadian waters
- Record vessel's progress, weather and sea conditions in ship's log
- Board vessels at berth or from pilot boats to advise ships' captains on the course to steer for safe passage into and out of ports, seaways or other waterways under pilotage authority
