Job summary

Domtar in Atikokan, Ontario, is seeking a Shift Supervisor for the Atikokan Sawmill. The role reports to the Sawmill/Planer Superintendent and leads shift supervision, coordinates maintenance activities, and ensures safe, efficient lumber finishing production.

You will oversee production, monitor materials, personnel and equipment, uphold safety standards, work with maintenance teams, ensure product quality, and drive continuous improvement through procedures and training.

Qualifications

  • Technical diploma, bachelor’s degree, or related industry experience.
  • Minimum of 3 to 4 years of equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated progression in leadership roles.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, communicate with all organizational levels and adapt quickly to change.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of MS Office and solid computer skills.
  • Self-motivated, safety-and-reliability oriented.
  • Good working knowledge of sawmill and planer mill equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail combined with the ability to see the big picture.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure application of highest safety standards for sawmill and yard operations.
  • Oversee the production sector by maximizing use of materials, personnel and equipment to meet or exceed production goals, quality and financial performance (monitoring and cost reduction).
  • Supervise, direct and guide employees to help them achieve maximum effectiveness; identify and meet their training needs in job, health and safety, and environmental areas.
  • Work with maintenance supervisors to ensure optimal performance and efficiency of maintenance activities.
  • Ensure product quality meets customer requirements by performing inspections and collaborating with Quality Control and Technical Services to develop programs.
  • Identify and recommend changes to improve production procedures, equipment performance, working conditions and product quality to increase sector efficiency.
  • Ensure all employees comply with company rules, policies, programs and procedures, and all applicable health and safety laws and ISO‑14001 processes.
  • Perform all administrative tasks: production, maintenance, timesheet, health and safety, performance, training and personnel transfer reports.

The position reports directly to the Sawmill / Planer Superintendent and is responsible for shift supervision, coordination of maintenance activities, and ensuring safe, efficient lumber finishing production.
