The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.

Then take the opportunity to apply as a Sheriff’s Officer 1, located in Yellowknife. As the Sheriff’s Officer 1, you will be reporting directly to the Manager of Sheriff’s Services. You will be responsible for the safety and security of the courthouse cell area and the incarcerated adults and youth. You will provide protective services for the judiciary, court staff, members of the public, in the courtroom and building security in court facilities. You will be providing secure escort of persons in-custody to courtrooms within the Yellowknife Courthouse and alternate court locations within Yellowknife. You will assist in performing civil enforcement duties which include conducting seizures, evictions, court ordered sales and service of court orders and legal documents. You will be in regular contact with the general public, legal community, judiciary, corrections and other clients providing and receiving information, interpret rules of the court and legislation pertaining to court actions. You must always conduct yourself (including outside of office hours) in a manner that will not cause the administration of justice to be or seen to be in disrepute and must also ensure that the independence of the judiciary is always upheld.
To be successful in this role, you must have completed a Diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution in law enforcement or related field along with one year of practical experience in a court security or enforcement environment.
OR
Completion of the Corrections Northern Recruitment Training Program (CNRTP) or similar Corrections training program plus 3 years of practical experience in a corrections environment dealing directly with supervision of in-custody (minimum 1700 hours per calendar year).
A bona fide requirement of the position is passing the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE).
Additional requirements for this position are Valid Class 4 driver’s license and current Standard First Aid CPR-C and AED Certificate.
