Job summary

The Salvation Army in Canada is seeking a Residential Worker B to provide a safe, secure environment for residents in a shelter setting. The role includes monitoring clients, recording activities and coordinating with external agencies as needed.

The successful candidate will have completed high school with Addictions Facilities coursework and prior frontline experience in social services. Willingness to participate in required precautionary measures is expected.

Qualifications

• High school diploma with up to six months of Addictions Facilities courses.
• Experience in frontline social services settings is preferred.
• Ability to monitor and support residents and maintain safety.

Responsibilities

• Monitors residents’ activities and provides personal, practical and morale support.
• Records daily happenings and maintains logs and reports.
• Liaises with external agencies as needed (welfare, police, parole).
• Coordinates client care related to security issues and may conduct checks or searches.
• May handle admissions, orientation and enforcement of house rules.
• May manage simple meals and reception duties for Shelter.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Description

JOB PURPOSE

The Residential Worker B provides a safe and secure environment for residents and visitors.

Characteristic Job Duties

• Monitors the activities of the clients/residents and maintains availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medications
• Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports
• Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g. welfare, police, parole, urgent situations)
• Coordinates client care relating to security issues; may be directly involved in taking urine samples, doing bed checks, room/personal searches
• May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures
• Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients’ understanding of rules; ensures ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline
• May handle finances relating to room rentals and meal tickets, and receipting of same
• May serve as Receptionist for Shelter
• May prepare or provide simple meals for clients/residents
• Performs other duties as assigned

NOTE: Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.

Minimum Education Level Attained

The successful job applicant will have completed high school, plus specialized courses of up to six (6) months (Addictions Facilities).

NOTE: An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.

Minimum Prior Related Experience

The incumbent must have the following experience before hire: More than three months but less than one year of prior related experience, including, experience with frontline work in a social services setting.

Physical Effort/Dexterity Required

The performance of the job requires moderate amounts of keyboarding, and performing walk abouts.

Concentration Required

The performance of the job requires continuously monitoring the environment, monitoring security cameras and attentiveness when interacting with clients and recording information.

Responsibility For Financial Resources

The incumbent’s responsibility for Financial Resources: The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly, or on a relief basis, or has responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources. He/She may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.

The incumbent’s responsibility for Human Resources: The incumbent is responsible for his/her own time and effort only. He/She may demonstrate work methods to new employees, volunteers and/or students.

Work Environment

The incumbent’s work environment is typically in a shelter and/or in treatment facilities.

The incumbent my have little to no travel required.

The incumbent carries a pager/walkie talkie and will work shift.

Precautionary Measures

Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

The pay rate is based on the Collective Agreement, not any other factors

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $22.98 to $23.10 with a maximum of $23.21. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
