Job summary

The Salvation Army is seeking a dedicated Shelter Worker to support Shelter Guests, Apartment Tenants and Visitors in a secure environment. You will help with admissions, orientation and policy enforcement while assisting with meals and daily operations.

Experience in social services is valued. A Grade 12 education, Food Safe level 1 and First Aid level 1 are required, along with a valid driver’s license. Accommodation can be provided upon request.

Qualifications

• Grade 12 or equivalent completed.
• Food Safe Level 1 certification.
• First Aid Level 1 certification.
• Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
• Ability to undergo background checks including vulnerable sector check.
• Experience in social services is an asset.

Responsibilities

• Read and apply shelter rules; admit, orient and evaluate clients accordingly.
• Handle reception duties and answer phones when needed.
• Monitor clients and provide personal, practical and morale support.
• Assist with meal prep, coffee service, cleaning and serving tasks.
• Perform safety checks and report concerns; maintain a safe environment.
• Communicate allergy information to cooks and staff; ensure respectful interactions.

As a faith- and values-based organization, we hire and serve people of all backgrounds and walks of life - there is a place for everyone to belong here.**Mission Statement** The Salvation Army exists to share the love of Jesus Christ, meet human needs and be a transforming influence in the communities of our world.**Job Description:****POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:**The Shelter Worker serves as The Salvation Army representative to Shelter Guests, Apartment Tenants and Visitors, providing them with a safe and secure environment.**ACCOUNTABILITIES:*** Reads HIFIS and Staff to Staff notes at the beginning of each shift* Handles the admission, orientation and evaluation of clients' understanding of rules; ensures ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include client discipline* May serve as Receptionist for Shelter answering phones promptly and as necessary* Monitor the activities of the clients/residents and maintain availability for personal, practical and morale support; may include providing safe storage of prescribed medications* May assist with meal prep, coffee service, clean-up and serving* Completes cleaning duties as assigned* Participate in scheduled job-related training as required* Performs other job-related duties as assigned* Provides appropriate assistance to guests when required**Written and Verbal Communication*** Communicates food allergy information to Cook* Communicates with other staff observation/concerns at shift change conference* Ensure all contact with donors, the public, staff from other agencies, and with staff from other Salvation Army programs are courteous and professional.* Always treat all residents with respect and dignity.**Reporting*** May carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures* Comply with all safety procedures* Ensures proper lifting, twisting & reaching techniques are used during job performance* Check intercom & monitor before answering the door.
