JOB SUMMARY
The Shelter Support Worker facilitates day-to-day communal living among residents of the Women and Children’s program through emotional support, information, referrals, and advocacy. The incumbent will act in accordance with The Bloom Group philosophy, providing low barrier harm reduction, trauma-informed support, and assistance to women and children in crisis.
EDUCATION / PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE :
- Diploma in Community Social Services, Social Service Work, or a relevant human services field is required; an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
- Two years of recent related work experience supporting women and/or children in crisis within a residential setting is required. Experience in related fields such as women’s advocacy, shelters, transitional housing, or second-stage housing may also be considered.
- Level 1 Occupational First Aid Certificate is required.
- Mandt training is required.
- Food Safe Certificate is required.
- WHMIS training is required.
REQUIREMENTS :

ABILITIES / SKILLS :
- Effective communication skills in English, both written and verbal.
- Advanced interpersonal skills including debriefing, active listening, conflict resolution, group facilitation, and problem-solving.
- Ability to contribute to a strong, inclusive, and collaborative team environment.
- Ability to work independently with high judgment and minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of child welfare and protection issues, legislation, and reporting requirements.
- Experience providing women-centered, culturally sensitive, strength-based parenting support.
- Compassion, understanding, and sensitivity in supporting women and children in crisis.
- Ability to give and receive constructive feedback.
- Commitment to ongoing learning and reflective practice.
- Understanding of issues affecting women and children in poverty, including those facing Indigenous, racialized, aging, or disabled women.
- Resilience in stressful and changing environments.
- Training or experience in conflict resolution, de-escalation, and risk assessment.
- Experience supporting individuals with mental health and substance use issues using harm reduction and trauma-informed care.
- Empathy for individuals experiencing abuse, poverty, grief, violence, mental health challenges, addictions, or living with HIV/AIDS or other life-threatening conditions.
- Physical ability to perform duties, operate related equipment, and handle industrial cleaning products.
