Job description

Job Title : Shelter Support Worker

Location: Moncton, NB

Shift: Monday to Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm

Wage: $20.00/hour

Job Summary:

The Shelter Support Staff is responsible for providing compassionate, trauma-informed support to individuals residing in the shelter. This role ensures a safe, clean, and respectful environment, while assisting clients with their basic needs and connecting them with available services. Shelter Support Staff play a critical role in maintaining the day-to-day operations of the facility and upholding the mission and values of the organization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the safety and well-being of all shelter residents.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming shelter environment.
  • Conduct client intakes, exits, and daily check-ins as needed.
  • Provide crisis intervention, de-escalation, and emotional support.
  • Enforce shelter rules and respond to incidents following established protocols.
  • Assist with distribution of meals, hygiene products, and other supplies.
  • Document services provided and maintain accurate, confidential records.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
  • Support case managers with client follow-ups or appointments as directed.
  • Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and supervision sessions.
  • Perform light housekeeping duties and monitor facility needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Human Services or related field preferred).
  • Previous experience working in a shelter, crisis intervention, or social services setting is highly desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress or emergency situations.
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care, harm reduction, and cultural humility.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and communication.
  • CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
  • Must pass background check and any required clearances.
  • Vulnerable Sector Check required

Work Environment & Physical Demands:

  • Must be able to work in a dynamic, sometimes high-stress environment.
  • Ability to stand, walk, lift up to 25 lbs, and perform cleaning tasks.
  • May require evening, weekend, overnight, or holiday shifts.
