Job Summary

Main Street Project operates a low-barrier, housing-first emergency shelter with 120 beds and drop-in spaces, open 365 days a year. Our services are free and available on a first-come, first-served basis. Low barrier means no requirement for abstinence or sobriety to access services.

Our drop-in offers food, beverages, a safe space for using the bathroom, showers, shelter during extreme weather, daytime sleeping space, clothing, harm reduction supplies, and pathways to permanent housing.

In accordance with MSP’s mission, the Support Worker provides services to assist and support participants toward long-term housing success. They connect community members with resources and support their self-determined goals.

The Support Worker upholds MSP’s core values of harm reduction, choice, equity, and diversity, encouraging self-awareness, self-worth, independence, and non-judgmental support.

Job Description

  • Support and provide resources without judgment to community members
  • Embodies MSP’s values in daily interactions
  • Assist with planning, problem-solving, and addressing immediate needs
  • Contribute to participant-centered care plans
  • Provide individual support for case management
  • Uphold community member rights and shelter code of conduct
  • Ensure community members understand program processes and expectations
  • Respond to emergencies, assess, intervene, and document incidents
  • Monitor physical safety and ensure medical attention when needed
  • Inform and advocate for community members to access resources
  • Assist with resource connection, application forms, and submissions
  • Maintain accurate, confidential records
  • Collect and submit statistics accurately and on time
  • Maintain cleanliness of the program area
  • Collaborate professionally with external agencies
  • Manage community member intake according to policies
  • Prepare and serve food following handling guidelines
  • Provide clothing, hygiene, and harm supplies
  • Monitor and restock supplies
  • Oversee laundry services
  • Respond to and de-escalate potentially aggressive situations
  • Support diversion from shelter
  • Maintain confidentiality per policies and legislation
  • Stay updated on MSP policies, safety protocols, and agreements

Qualifications

  • Experience in human services, preferably with homelessness, mental health, or substance use issues
  • Experience in emergency shelters or outreach is an asset
  • Ability to work with a community-centered care philosophy
  • Knowledge of Harm Reduction, Trauma-Informed Care, Anti-Oppressive, and Housing First approaches
  • Knowledge of Indigenous culture
  • Lived experience relevant to the role
  • Understanding of TRC Calls to Action, MMIWG Calls to Justice, and UNDRIP
  • Knowledge of poverty's effects and social determinants of health
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team
  • Knowledge in addiction and mental health fields is an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Ability to handle challenging behaviors and crises
  • De-escalation and conflict resolution skills
  • Ability to assess and manage crises
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and online databases
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and MHFA certifications

Conditions Of Employment

  • Ability to meet physical demands, including long periods on your feet, lifting up to 50 lbs, and cleaning duties
  • Exposure to biohazards like blood and bodily fluids
  • Ability to support individuals using substances or with mental health issues
  • Support in high-intensity incidents such as medical emergencies and aggression
  • Comfort working in environments with Indigenous ceremonies, including Smudging
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Checks, and Adult Abuse Registry Check
