Job description

3566 - Shelter Movers - Drivers (Vehicles & Gas Provided)

Shelter Movers is a national, volunteer-powered charitable organization providing moving and storage services at no cost to individuals and families fleeing abuse. We collaborate with local businesses and community agencies to support people, primarily women and children, as they transition to a life free of violence.

Volunteering at Shelter Movers means contributing to a mission that makes a meaningful impact on families experiencing abuse and supporting survivors as they transition to a life free of violence. It also plays a role in ending gender-based violence. We are growing and looking to add caring, compassionate, and dependable people to our team.

The Role

Movers and Drivers are essential to our organization, executing the mission on the ground by moving clients' belongings to safety. Working in groups of 2-6, guided by a detailed itinerary, volunteers will load/unload belongings into vehicles and transport clients to designated locations. Rental vehicles are provided, and those with valid driver’s licenses are encouraged to register as drivers.

This role offers a chance to make a tangible impact through hands-on volunteering for small, flexible time commitments. Each move lasts approximately 6-8 hours, with some involving police or security escorts depending on risk level. Moves may occur within or outside the city, with details shared per move. Volunteers can sign up according to their availability.

Responsibilities and Accountabilities

  • Meet with other movers at scheduled times and locations
  • Load and unload belongings and transport them safely to the specified destination

Skills and Qualifications

  • Ability to lift at least 20 lbs, including boxes and furniture
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing plans
  • Work well in a team and follow directions
  • Able to pass a police check

Additional Information

  • Vehicles are provided through partner rental agencies, with fuel reimbursed
  • Minimum age: 21; Maximum age: 99
  • Valid G2 or G license required (DZ/AZ/C licenses accepted)
  • Volunteers will receive training, including AODA and trauma-informed orientation, with ongoing opportunities such as Truck Driving and Moving training

Time Commitment

This is a flexible commitment, with a minimum of one move per month. Moves are scheduled between 9 AM and 4 PM, lasting 6-8 hours, and volunteers can choose shifts based on their availability.
