Established in 1994, Victim Services is a Branch of the Hamilton Police Service (HPS). It is the only 24-hour on scene crisis intervention service for victims of crime and trauma in the City of Hamilton. The Victim Services Branch responds to the immediate needs of people who have been victimized by crime and / or trauma such as homicides, suicides, sudden death, assaults, sexual assaults, domestic violence, motor vehicle and fire fatalities, robberies and harassment. Victim Services Branch staff and specially trained volunteers provide practical assistance, emotional support and referrals for additional community resources.

The Hamilton Police Service is looking for a compassionate and self-motivated individual with exceptional interpersonal skills to take on the highly rewarding role of the Sexual Assault Support Program (SASP) Coordinator.

Position Summary :

Under the direction of the Victim Services Administrator, the SASP Coordinator is responsible for responding to and providing crisis intervention to victims of sexual assault on scene, in office, or over the telephone. The SASP Coordinator meets with each victim to assess needs, conducts safety plans, completes financial compensation applications and provides accompaniment during statements with the Sex Crimes Unit.

Duties include, but not limited to;

  • Providing emotional and practical support to victims of sexual violence (or other crime types) in office, by phone or on-scene
  • Collaborating with internal and external resources to establish safe reporting processes, including accompanying victims in interviews with Detectives
  • Collaborating with community organizations and agencies to facilitate victim needs, such as shelter, housing, safety planning, compensation, counselling etc.
  • Reporting, creating, and updating resources used by the HPS
  • Evaluating program needs including grant / funding opportunities
  • Providing police members with feedback on occurrences involving victims, completing referrals to the Victim / Witness Assistance Programs
  • Providing education / training to Officers and community agencies regarding sexual assault and SASP

Supervisory Responsibilities :

Not applicable.

Working Conditions :

Regular office environment but may need to travel to and from various work locations. Work may be performed in an environment with exposure to disagreeable conditions, such as attending scenes of crime and homes in disagreeable conditions, dealing with victims of crime and tragedy.

Physical & Sensory Demands / Dexterity :

Assignments will involve activities such as reading, writing, keyboarding, talking, listening, sitting, walking, driving, and standing at crime scenes for lengthy periods of time.

Education :

Minimum 3-year University degree in the field of Social Sciences or Social Work (e.g. Psychology, Criminology, Legal / Justice Studies and Sociology).

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Minimum of 3 years of full-time practical experience working in and with crisis intervention and victims of crime. Experience working directly with victims of sexual assault would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated short-term counselling and crisis intervention skills with victims of crime and trauma.
  • Working knowledge of resources available in Hamilton and surrounding regions to support individuals impacted by sexual violence.
  • Excellent communication skills (speaking, listening, and report writing).
  • Ability to initiate, promote and facilitate positive victim services initiatives within the service demonstrated through networking and team building skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, while being flexible and adaptable re : hours of work.
  • Self-motivation, enthusiasm, sound judgment and exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated computer skills (e.g. Word, Excel, case management and online scheduling software).

Certifications & Licenses :

Valid Class G Driver's License, or the equivalent, with no more than six (6) accumulated demerit points, permitting you to drive an automobile in Ontario with full driving privileges.
