Description:

The Introduction to Caribbean Studies seminar is designed to support TYP students enrolled in CAR120Y1 by helping them identify key information in lectures and gain a thorough understanding of course material and assignments. The seminar will explore Caribbean history, literature, and thought, addressing issues such as gender, religion, politics, culture, ethnicity, race, development, language, colonialism, and regional common markets. Your duties, as governed by Article 7:03 of the Collective Agreement between the University of Toronto and CUPE 3902 Unit 3, will include:

  • Create a course syllabus for TYP056.
  • Instruct and assist students in learning, fostering an encouraging, creative, and positive environment for diverse learning needs.
  • Prepare and present seminar materials to support students in academic writing within social sciences, history, and critical theory.
  • Counsel students regarding academic progress and facilitate access to non-academic support services.
  • Set and grade assignments, tests, exams, and manage course administration.
  • Supervise assigned TA support.
  • Evaluate attendance and participation.
  • Attend faculty meetings regularly.
  • Submit assessment marks for TYP056.

Qualifications: Completed or nearly completed Ph.D. in Caribbean Studies or a related field, with coursework and/or extensive research. In-depth knowledge of TYP student supports, curriculum, and culture. Demonstrated commitment to equity and anti-oppressive/social-justice educational approaches. Familiarity with Quercus and online/remote teaching methods.

Preferred Qualifications: University-level teaching experience preferred. Relevant work experience or coursework related to anti-oppression and social justice. Knowledge of the University of Toronto community and student experience is an asset. Experience advising students and providing academic support is desirable.
