Course number and title: Sessional Lecturer – PHY100H1F – The Magic of Physics

Course description: This course provides a survey of Physics, including both Classical and Modern Physics. It is designed for non-scientists, and assumes no background in either science or mathematics. The approach to the course is broad rather than deep. Topics include planetary motion, chaos, the nature of light, time travel, black holes, matter waves, Schrödinger's cat, quarks, and climate change. The course explores the wonders of classical and quantum worlds through the works of Galileo, Newton, Maxwell, Einstein, Heisenberg, and others.

Estimated course enrolment: 196 students

Estimated TA support: TBA hours (contingent upon enrolment)

Class schedule
  • Lectures: Thursday 1:00-3:00pm
  • Tutorials: Tuesday 3:00-4:00pm / Wednesday 3:00-4:00pm / Thursday 3:00-4:00pm (Led by TAs)

The course is currently delivered in-person, but delivery method may change as determined by the Faculty or Department.

Sessional dates of appointment:

September 1, 2025 – December 31, 2025

Salary:

Pay for half course, including vacation pay:

  • Sessional Lecturer I: $9,820.70
  • Sessional Lecturer I Long Term: $10,510.04
  • Sessional Lecturer II: $10,510.04
  • Sessional Lecturer II Long Term: $10,760.28
  • Sessional Lecturer III: $10,760.28
  • Sessional Lecturer III Long Term: $11,030.36

Note: If rates vary per the collective agreement, the agreement prevails.

Minimum qualifications:
  • PhD in Physics
  • Experience teaching introductory physics at the university level
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching similar courses to non-science students
Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the undergraduate course
  • Prepare and deliver lectures
  • Supervise and train TAs, including overseeing DDAH forms
  • Prepare, supervise, and grade tests and exams, submit final grades
  • Hold scheduled office hours for student counseling
