Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Business and IT, the Sessional Lecturer provides instruction to undergraduate students inINFR 1411U – Introduction to Networking I.

Course Description:

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of enterprise networking and helps them gain both the conceptual and practical skills. The following topics are covered: principles of communication and computer networking, Internet applications and architecture, networking terminology and protocols; LANs and WANs, Open System Interconnection (OSI) and TCP/IP models, Ethernet, Internet Protocol (IP) addressing and subnetting, VLSM and CIDR, physical media and cabling, design and documentation of a basic network, router user interfaces, components and configuration, basics of IOS, distance-vector and link-state routing algorithms, and introduction routing protocols. This course includes very intensive lab work based on Cisco Networking Academy curriculum.

Tuesday – 2:10pm – 5:00pm

Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

The primary responsibility of the applicant is to (develop and) teach a theoretically, methodologically sophisticated and relevant course at the university level within the parameters of the course description listed above. In keeping with a technology-enhanced learning environment utilizing laptop computers and wireless connectivity, the Sessional Lecturer will deliver the course using a technology-enhanced learning approach that includes a variety of inclusive teaching and learning strategies and assessments.The Sessional Lecturer will prepare, deliver and grade all course material and assignments and be available for consultation with students during and following completion of the course session.

This position falls within the bargaining unit represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and will be subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the University and PSAC. The collective agreement may be found on the Human Resources section of our website.Candidates will be required to certify that they are currently legally eligible to work in Canada for the duration of the contract.

Qualifications:

In addition to the Required Education, Required Skills, and Required Experience set out below, the successful candidate will have a proven aptitude for teaching at theundergraduate level, with demonstrated potential for making excellent contributions to teaching.

Candidates will be required to certify that they are currently, and will be for the duration of the contract, legally eligible to work in Canada.

Note that this course will be delivered in-person at Ontario Tech University’s North Campus in Oshawa, Ontario.

Required Education:

In addition to the industry certifications listed in the Required Experience section, candidates must meet at least one of the following educational requirements:

• Hold a Masters or PhD/PhD (ABD) in Computer Science with a focus on IT systems and/or networking

Candidates with a Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or IT may be considered if they hold CCNA certification, in combination with industry experience. Candidates should outline their industry experience in their cover letter.

Required Experience

• Candidates must hold a CCNA Cisco certification
• Preference will be given to candidates with Cisco instructor certification
• Candidates must have familiarity with the Cisco Networking Academy curriculum and labs. Candidates should outline their experience with the Academy curriculum and labs in their cover letter in order to demonstrate their familiarity with these materials and labs
• Experience teaching in an undergraduate IT or networking programs is an asset. Candidates should include teaching evaluations and examples of past course outlines as part of their application package

Priority will be given to an Internal Applicant who has taught any course for the University in three (3) different sessions in the past thirty-six (36) months, provided they meet the requirements for the position as outlined in the job posting.
