Title and number of the course: LIN211H1F – American Sign Language 1

Course description: This course is an introductory language course for students with little or no prior knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL). It provides an immersive introduction to ASL, with a focus on basic vocabulary, grammar, conversation, and appropriate behaviours for everyday interactions in a variety of social situations. The language is taught through various immersive activities, such as lecture/discussion, interactive games, and situational conversations, supplemented with readings and videos. A significant emphasis throughout the course is placed on Deaf culture and issues facing the Deaf community.

An estimate of the course enrolment: 3 5 undergraduates

Hours of Work: 50 hours per position

Class schedule: Online Asynchronous

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2025 - December 31, 2025

* This course is scheduled to be online. Please note that, in keeping with current circumstances, this course may be delivered in-person, remotely/online, or by a combination of delivery methods as determined by the Faculty or Department at a later date.

Salary: $54.27 per hour

Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate must be fluent in ASL and English. Documentation of native or near-native fluency in ASL is required. They must also have knowledge of Deaf culture and/or lived experience with a Deaf community. For ASL, the minimum level of proficiency required is Level 5 of ASLPI. Additionally, familiarity with various ASL curriculums, such as Signing Naturally and TRUE+WAY ASL (TWA), is essential.

Preferred Qualifications : A Master's or PhD in a relevant field is preferred. Previous experience working with Teaching Assistants/Graders is desirable. Excellent teaching evaluations and relevant active research are an asset.

A brief description of the duties: The Sessional Instructional Assistant position include grading of assignments, tests, and exams, invigilation of tests/exams, and, if applicable, the teaching of tutorials. The work of the sessional instructional assistant may include assisting instructors with design and implementation of assignments, tests, and exams. Timely email communication with the instructor is essential. This course will be delivered online.
