DUTIES

HUMS 1540: Introduction to Interpersonal Communications and Helping Relationships

The School of Social Work and Human Service at Thompson Rivers University invites applications for a sessional lecturer to teach HUMS 1540 in Fall 2024. The course is delivered face-to-face at the Kamloops campus.

Students explore self-awareness as a foundation for competent human service work, focusing on self-knowledge, self-reflection, and effective interpersonal communication, examining motivations, emotions, values, attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, learning styles, and self-concept.

Learning Outcomes include:

  • Understanding motivations, emotions, values, attitudes, beliefs, perceptions, learning styles, and self-concept.
  • Developing personal awareness, self-understanding, and communication skills.
  • Applying relationship-building skills in helping contexts.
  • Describing major theories of interpersonal communication.
  • Using basic communication skills like questioning, paraphrasing, and summarizing.
  • Understanding group dynamics and roles.
  • Recognizing the impact of social location and diversity on practice.

Qualifications
  • A Master’s degree in Social Work or Child and Youth Care is required; a Doctorate is preferred. Candidates with a relevant bachelor’s degree and graduate studies may also be considered.
  • Teaching experience at the post-secondary level is preferred, especially with entry-level students.
  • At least five years of professional experience in social work or child and youth care is required.
Professional Qualities
  • Experience integrating Indigenous knowledge and teaching methods is required.
  • Skills in fostering intercultural understanding and empathy are required.
  • Ability to develop culturally appropriate curricula is required.

Pay Band: $2,575.50 per credit
