Duties Description
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Diagnose and correct faulty vehicle and equipment operation.
- Overhaul, adjust, and repair gaseous fuel engines, clutches, transmissions, differentials, ignition, wiring, lighting, fuel, cooling, braking, hydraulic systems, steering, suspension, and body components.
- Conduct NYS inspections.
- Overhaul and rebuild starters, generators, compressors, pumps, spreaders, small engines, mowers, and other equipment including track vehicles, loaders, cranes, shovels, lifts, hydraulic excavators.
- Diagnose and repair electronic engine control systems, anti-lock brake systems, and air conditioning.
- Perform cutting and welding as required.
- Make road calls and test drive equipment.
- Complete reports, use parts catalogs, and perform related duties.
- Utilize fleet management software and DOT electronic systems for repairs, ordering, and inventory management.
- Overtime is required, and during Winter Maintenance Season, shifts may vary.
Responsibilities may include supporting the department’s response to emergency situations within the Incident Command System.
Minimum Qualifications
- Four years of experience as an automotive or diesel mechanic diagnosing faulty vehicle/equipment operation and performing mechanical repairs across automotive/diesel systems. (Specify repair types and vehicle types on application.)
- Successful completion of the NYS Department of Labor-approved Diesel Engine Mechanic apprenticeship.
- An Associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair technology.
Substitution
Education may substitute for up to two years of experience as follows:
- Graduation from a technical/vocational program in automotive or diesel technology may substitute for one year of experience.
- Graduation from a one-year post-high school certificate in automotive or diesel repair may substitute for up to two years of experience.
Experience limited to aviation mechanic, gas station attendant, small engines, auto body repair, or shop management does NOT qualify.
Within one year of appointment, candidates must obtain:
- A valid NYS Inspection Certification.
- A valid NYS Class B Commercial Driver’s License with no air brake restriction.
Note
All candidates must pass a pre-employment physical, medical examination, and drug test. Cannabis use is prohibited and will be tested during screening, potentially leading to disqualification or removal from employment.
