The West Island Association for the Intellectually Handicapped, better known by its acronym WIAIH (pronounced why-ah), is dedicated to enhancing the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities or autism spectrum disorders, providing support to their families, maintaining, and developing innovative services, and raising community awareness. Our activities include recreational services, specialized camps, social activities, support for families, information sessions, permanent residence, an early childhood development center, a day and afternoon program for an aging clientele, and much more.

WIAIH is currently seeking to fill the position of Seniors Care Worker in its Active-Action program, offered in partnership with the CIUSSS Ouest de l’Île and the Lester B. Pearson School Board’s Endeavour Program. The program offers our aging population stimulating pre-retirement activities, whether in the form of a day program or home visits. We are looking for a team player who is creative, adaptable, compassionate, dynamic and autonomous who will be responsible to provide participants with new opportunities, drawing on therapeutic recreation and educational approaches and who embraces strength-based approach focused on quality of life.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Active-Action Manager, the Seniors Care worker will have the following main responsibilities:

  • Care for participant’s hygiene, medical, dietary and toileting needs;
  • Evaluate program participants and create personalized objectives;
  • Ensure that participants are engaged, stimulated and have the opportunities to take part in a variety of activities that benefit their well-being and enjoyment throughout their time in the program;
  • Plan and implement stimulating and appropriate group and individual programming;
  • Practice a strength-based approach and encourage participants’ independence;
  • Promptly consult and seek support in the event of any issues concerning the participants, program and/or facility;
  • Guide, orient and support volunteers/interns;
  • Complete necessary paperwork as required (ex: attendance, shifts & communication logs, medication forms, incident reports, etc.);
  • Be able to provide constant support to WIAIH team;
  • Any other tasks as requested by the Supervisor.

TRAINING AND SKILLS PROFILE

  • DEC in Special Education Techniques, Community Recreation Leadership Training or equivalent in a related field;
  • Have a valid Driver’s license and access to a vehicle;
  • Experience working with a vulnerable clientele (a plus);
  • Bilingualism essential because of the language spoken by the clientele;
  • Basic computer skills;
  • Good organizational skills;
  • Able to use discretion in their role;
  • Promote teamwork, harmony, empathy, communication, collaboration between work colleagues;
  • Have a desire to make a difference in a social environment and have strong empathy for people with an intellectual disability and/or an autism spectrum disorder.

Hourly wage based on experience;

Daytime schedule of 35 hours per week; including one day per week on the road for home visits.

Start date: as soon as possible.

Work location : Active-Action location in Pierrefonds, QC.
