Job description

Your Opportunity

Senior Water Resources Engineer – Markham office (open to any location across Canada) within Stantec’s Environmental Services Business Line. Focus on mine water management and related hydraulic/hydrologic projects.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage mine water resources management projects from project economic assessments to closure plans.
  • Perform baseline studies and water management design and planning, including water balance and/or water quality model development for NI 43-101 studies as a Qualified Person.
  • Conduct surface water resources studies and assessments for environmental assessments, baseline water quality and hydrology studies, and water balance and water quality model development.
  • Plan mine closure studies and support related works.
  • Technical lead for design of water management infrastructure: sedimentation ponds, drainage ditches, dewatering plans, erosion and sediment control, watercourse crossings, diversions, and realignments.
  • Provide technical leadership within multidisciplinary teams, integrating findings into defensible recommendations.
  • Oversee project budgets, staff allocation, and invoice preparation and review.
  • Prepare proposals, develop work plans, schedules, and budgets; manage projects and tasks.
  • Author clear and comprehensive technical reports documenting modeling results, field investigations, and analytical findings.
  • Design and supervise hydrological and water quality field investigations.
  • Collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams to contribute to project success.
  • Apply industry standards, guidelines, and regulatory frameworks consistently.
  • Primarily office‑based work involving extended computer use and data analysis.
  • Travel to field sites as required, including occasional overnight stays.
Capabilities and Credentials
  • Experience with numerical hydrodynamic, hydrologic, and hydraulic modeling tools (e.g., HEC‑HMS, HEC‑RAS, PCSWMM, CORMIX).
  • Experience with site‑wide mine water balance and/or water quality models (e.g., GoldSim).
  • Experience with water management infrastructure design (e.g., ditches, sedimentation ponds, culverts, watercourse crossings, diversions, watercourse realignments).
  • Solid understanding of provincial and federal water resources legislation, regulations, and guidance.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to achieve team goals and mentor junior staff.
  • Capacity to manage multiple projects and tasks consistently.
  • Strong business development, client engagement, and financial management skills.
  • Effective time management, organization, and prioritization.
  • Disciplined approach to project execution and technical excellence.
  • Strong problem‑solving and timely decision‑making abilities.
  • Commitment to Health, Safety, Security, and Environment (HSSE) standards.
  • Valid G‑class driver’s license required.
Education and Experience
  • Master’s or Doctorate‑level degree in a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in consulting or regulatory environments related to mine water management.
  • Professional registration with the Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or another Canadian Professional Engineering Association.

Pay Range (2026)
  • PEI: $94,900 – $142,300 annually.
  • Outside Lower Mainland – BC & Variety of Ontario locations: $106,700 – $156,700 annually.
  • Lower Mainland – BC, GTA & Ottawa Ontario: $114,600 – $164,600 annually.
Location

Markham, Ontario (other locations across Canada available).
