Job summary

Stantec is seeking a Senior Vegetation Ecologist for our Regina or Saskatoon office. The role focuses on program development and execution across diverse sectors such as oil and gas, mining, and transportation within the vegetation ecology and wetland disciplines.

You will lead wetland assessments, conduct field surveys, prepare environmental assessments for regulators, and mentor junior staff while ensuring QA/QC and client engagement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science – Biology, Ecology, Forestry, or a related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Professional designation (P. Bio., R.P.F., P.Ag.) is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead wetlands assessments, ecological land classification surveys, and vegetation inventories.
  • Perform biophysical field surveys per provincial species detection protocols.
  • Prepare environmental assessments for municipal, provincial, and federal regulators.
  • Mentor junior/intermediate staff and manage project scope and QA/QC.
  • Develop regulatory strategy and engage clients, regulators, and stakeholders.

Job description

Stantec is seeking a highly motivated, personable, and organized Senior Vegetation Ecologist for our Regina or Saskatoon office. The role focuses on program development and execution across diverse sectors such as oil and gas, mining, and transportation within the vegetation ecology and wetland disciplines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and conduct wetland assessments, ecological land classification surveys, and vegetation inventories, emphasizing species of conservation concern including species at risk and weeds.
  • Perform biophysical field surveys in accordance with provincial species detection protocols (e.g., vascular plant).
  • Prepare environmental assessments for municipal, provincial, and federal regulators across multiple sectors.
  • Work on natural resource planning projects, such as natural area inventories and biophysical assessments.
  • Ensure adherence to Quality Assurance and Quality Control procedures and participate in QA/QC reviews of deliverables.
  • Conduct desktop mapping of wetlands and vegetation communities.
  • Interact directly with internal and external clients and build strong relationships with clients, regulators, and stakeholders.
  • Lead and direct field assessments when required.
  • Train junior and intermediate staff in field and reporting requirements to meet project and regulatory standards.
  • Identify scope and budget for proposal submissions.
  • Attend client meetings and help develop regulatory strategy for projects.
  • Participate in HSSE Policies, Procedures, Standards, and Guidelines for all work.
  • Execute technical tasks or requirements for medium to large projects.
  • Support junior and intermediate staff as a mentor and leader.
  • Proactively advance the technical needs of the team.
Capabilities and Credentials
  • Proficient in HSSE policies and procedures, including client‑specific training.
  • Advanced technical writing skills.
  • Over ten years of experience leading vascular plant surveys with local flora in Saskatchewan and/or Manitoba.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment under deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills with clients, engineers, scientists, regulators, academia, and the general public.
  • Disciplined project execution and commitment to technical excellence.
  • At least 10 years of experience executing vegetation and wetland aspects of medium to complex projects.
  • Familiarity with relevant provincial and federal regulations and guidelines.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, ArcGIS, and digital data collection applications such as ArcGIS Field Maps and Survey123.
  • Champion new ideas and initiatives, fostering creativity and innovation.
  • Strong networking skills, building and maintaining professional and personal relationships.
  • Good driving record and valid Class 5 driver’s license required.
Education & Experience
