Job summary

Stantec Consulting International Ltd. is seeking an Environmental Scientist/Technologist to join a local Saskatchewan team, focusing on field-based environmental monitoring, reporting, and regulatory compliance across infrastructure, mining, and energy projects.

You will conduct biophysical surveys, support regulatory permits, manage data, and collaborate with regulators, clients, and contractors. Travel and field work form a major portion of the role, with mentorship and growth opportunities

Qualifications

  • Diploma or post-secondary degree in biology, forestry, agricultural, or environmental sciences.
  • Minimum of three to four years of field experience in oil and natural gas exploration and/or comparable development projects.
  • Experience with environmental monitoring and environmental inspection is required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide environmental monitoring services during construction, maintenance, and reclamation phases; report conformity with regulatory obligations.
  • Conduct biophysical field surveys per provincial protocols and wildlife/species detection rules.
  • Perform pre-construction surveys for nesting migratory birds and other species at risk.
  • Assist with development of regulatory permits and government submissions.
  • Complete data management, analysis, and report preparation.
  • Adhere to health, safety, and quality management protocols.
  • Communicate effectively with mentors, teams, regulators, clients, and contractors.

Your Opportunity

With a focus on local projects, the Environmental Scientist/Technologist will support a diverse team of environmental professionals providing services to multiple sectors (e.g., infrastructure, mining, oil and gas, power). Key project responsibilities include conducting environmental monitoring and achieving quality report delivery in a fast-paced, client-focused environment. The successful candidate will have a diverse skill set, preferably in multiple environmental disciplines and a passion for lifelong learning. Environmental professionals in this position will support a variety of environmental assessment, permitting, and compliance projects. On the job training/mentorship provided. This role will involve field work for roughly 60-70% of the time.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Providing environmental monitoring services during the construction, maintenance and/or reclamation phases of projects. This may include observing and reporting on how projects are conforming with their compliance obligations regarding environmental effects related to various sectors such as the oil and gas industry, mining sector, linear projects and/or hydro development
  • Conducting biophysical field surveys in accordance with provincial species detection protocols and regulations (e.g., rare plant and/or various wildlife surveys, The Wildlife Regulations, Roster Species Detection Protocols)
  • Conducting pre-construction surveys for nesting migratory birds, as well as for wildlife and plant species at risk
  • Through the conduct of field investigations, supporting and assisting the development of federal, provincial and municipal regulatory permits
  • Completing office tasks such as data management, analysis and interpretation, report preparation and other general tasks as required
  • Complying with health and safety and quality management protocols
  • Interacting and communicating effectively (written and verbal) with mentors, multi-disciplinary teams, regulators, clients, subconsultants, and contractors
Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Understanding of environmental mitigations for soils, aquatic habitats (e.g., wetlands, waterbodies, watercourses), migratory birds, species at risk, and vegetation
  • Knowledge and experience in the conduct of biophysical and/or preconstruction surveys
  • Experience and ability to oversee and/or supervise field monitoring tasks related to (for example): soil sediment management, vegetation clearing, removal and installation of water course crossings, equipment inspection for bio-security management, installation and maintenance of erosion and sediment control plans)
  • Experience with wildlife and/or plant identification is considered an asset, especially Species at Risk
  • Familiarity with the Wildlife Regulations Act, Species at Risk Act, Fisheries Act and an overall working knowledge of federal and provincial environmental assessment legislation. Working knowledge of Species at Risk Protocols considered an asset and field investigations with SARA species an asset Experience with the writing and development of environmental permit applications and technical reports for submission to Regulatory agencies
  • Willingness and ability to travel and work outdoors, often in remote areas
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and foster effective working relationships
  • Task ownership, accountability and initiative
  • Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills with the ability to adapt under shifting priorities
  • Valid Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract (required)
Education and Experience
  • Diploma or post-secondary degree in biology, forestry, agricultural, or environmental sciences
  • Minimum of three (3) to four (4) years of field experience in oil and natural gas exploration and/or comparable development projects. Experience must be related to environmental monitoring and environmental inspection.

The successful candidate will primarily engage in field work, with occasional office-based tasks. Travel will be required for field work and may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather. Ability to lift and move items and equipment up to 50 lbs. This role has a flexible hybrid structure, working in the office minimum three (3) days a week when not in the field.

Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
