Who are we looking for?
Our EDO (Engineering Design Organization) is seeking a Utilities Designer with strong experience in Civil 3D to support the planning and design of utility infrastructure relocations for transit and civil projects. The successful candidate will work closely with engineers, project managers, and other designers to produce high-quality utility layouts and conflict coordination drawings. This role can be based out of one of our Southern Ontario offices: Whitby, Waterloo, Mississauga, Markham, Kingston, or St. Catharines.
The Transportation Group within GHD Canada works with Provincial, Regional, and local municipal transportation agencies, as well as select contracting partners, on large-scale projects across the transportation spectrum of highways, roads, bridges, transit, and multi-modal infrastructure. Our team provides integrated transportation services throughout the project lifecycle, from initial policy, transportation economics, and business case advice through to concept, environmental assessment, detailed design, construction administration, and asset management support.
Working with an energetic and high-performing team, this position offers a variety of work and involves:
- Preparing detailed utility design drawings using AutoCAD Civil 3D, including plan and profile views, cross-sections, and utility relocations.
- Supporting the development of utility relocation strategies for transit corridor projects.
- Reviewing and processing SUE reports, preparing utility conflict matrices, and coordinating with SUE providers on additional SUE investigation needs.
- Assisting in clash detection and resolution between utilities and other civil elements.
- Performing the relocation designs of municipal and/or private third-party utilities in civil infrastructure transit projects.
- Preparing Composite Utility Plans, utility relocation plans, 3D models for utilities, and other engineering drawings and specifications.
- Maintaining drawing standards and ensuring compliance with applicable codes and client requirements.
- Coordinating with internal teams and external stakeholders (e.g., municipalities, utility companies) to gather design inputs, resolve conflicts, and ensure timely flow of information.
- Participating in design reviews and contributing to technical discussions.
- Supporting project documentation, including quantity take-offs and design reports.
- Tracking and monitoring progress of multiple parties involved in subsurface utility engineering field works and utility relocation design and construction works.
Responsibilities
- Data Collection and Analysis: Collate and analyze data using preset tools, methods, and formats, working independently.
- Solutions Analysis: Interpret data and identify possible answers, navigating various processes and procedures.
- Applications Software Maintenance: Monitor, identify, and correct complex software defects to maintain applications.
- Personal Capability Building: Develop capabilities through assessment, training, and coaching; maintain external professional accreditation if relevant; stay updated on technology, regulation, and industry best practices.
- Operating Machines or Equipment: Operate complex systems, optimize processes, and carry out new product trials.
- Design and Conceptualization: Produce multiple concepts and prototypes for digital products/services.
- Product and Solution Development: Define and deliver products/services meeting customer needs.
- Operational Compliance: Identify non-compliance issues within the team, report, and escalate as appropriate.
- Quality Assurance Testing: Conduct specialized tests, validate, and interpret data to ensure specifications are met or identify remedial actions.
What you will bring to the team:
- Diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in utility design, preferably in transit or municipal infrastructure.
- Proficiency in corridor and pipe network modules in AutoCAD Civil 3D.
- Knowledge of Bentley software such as Microstation, Navisworks, and REVIT is advantageous.
- Familiarity with utility coordination processes and third-party utility standards.
- Ability to perform complex design tasks in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Strong attention to detail and multitasking skills.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills with a positive attitude.
Assets:
- Experience with Metrolinx or large-scale transit projects.
- Knowledge of Ontario utility permitting processes and standards.
- Exposure to BIM workflows or 3D coordination tools.
- Having EIT status or working towards P.Eng is an asset.
