As a Senior Underwriting Specialist, NRP, you will provide thought leadership and industry recognized expertise on National Resource Practice (NRP) underwriting practices and function as an advisor and mentor for all underwriters regarding complex insurance risks. The role is national in scope, partnering with brokers across Canada in renewable energy, power generation, mining, oil & gas, excess property, and large scale technical construction for a variety of other industries.

How you will create impact:
  • Participate in the on-going refinement of the risk appetite and underwriting strategies for NRP.
  • Mentor and provide underwriting guidance to all underwriting personnel including management.
  • Collect, assess, and disseminate industry intelligence to the team and the regions, identifying key areas of major impact to the business.
  • Underwrite and manage a profitable book of new and renewal business as per Sovereign appetite and guidelines.
  • Analyze wordings to ensure terms and conditions, including auxiliary coverages, are appropriate. Identification when legal consultation is necessary.
  • Analyze risk including understanding the technology and processes, exposure identification and associated risk mitigation controls. Reviewing for risk acceptability and engaging risk engineering collaboration.
  • Promote the NRP core appetite, products, and capabilities externally across our Canada wide broker distribution channels.
  • Develop and maintain positive and mutually beneficial relationships with brokers.

To join our team:
  • You have a Bachelors degree, with one of the following professional designations: CIP, FCIP, CRM
  • 10+ years of experience in commercial underwriting specifically in Property, Equipment Breakdown and Excess Liability, with at least 5 at the senior or specialist level.
  • Strong analytical skills and an understanding of portfolio analysis metrics
  • Specialized experience in Renewable Energy, Power Generation, Mining and Oil & Gas
  • This position primarily works with majority non-francophone groups, and teams located outside of Québec, and requires proficiency in English. The essential non-French duties are not assignable to adjacent or other team members.

Expected Salary Range: $ 102,164.00 - $170,273.00

The salary amount for the successful candidate is determined by Co-operators in its discretion and will vary depending on several criteria including but not limited to: local market conditions, geography and relevant job-related factors such as knowledge, skills, qualification, experience and education.
