Position Title : Senior Underwriting Consultant – Large Case

Reports To : Director, Individual Underwriting

Department : Individual Underwriting

Term : Permanent Full-Time

Work Arrangements : Fully remote with potential in-person requirements in Waterloo, ON, or other locations within the Waterloo Region. Travel may be required for sales roles.

The Opportunity : We are seeking a Senior Underwriting Consultant with large case experience to assess life and critical illness products and contribute to both traditional and data-driven underwriting projects. This role offers a chance to work at one of Waterloo Region’s Top Employers.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Apply comprehensive underwriting expertise across medical, financial, and non-medical risk factors for affluent and high net worth Canadians.
  • Mentor, train, and co-sign for other underwriters.
  • Maintain high standards of quality and productivity, ensuring favorable audit results.
  • Collaborate with team members to meet service standards.
  • Participate in traditional and data-based projects.
  • Assess claims, rescissions, and reinstatements.
  • Develop and present opportunities to distribution partners and internal teams.
  • Ensure compliance with legislation, consumer regulations, and reinsurance treaties.
  • Contribute to the professional development of underwriting practices.
  • Engage in travel as needed.

Qualifications :

  • Expertise in medical, financial, and non-medical underwriting.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and proactive skills.
  • Adaptability to dynamic work environments.
  • Ownership mindset for achieving goals.
  • Excellent negotiation and reinsurance relationship skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Data literacy or willingness to learn.
  • Degree or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of professional experience in life and critical illness underwriting, especially in affluent markets.
  • Relevant designations (FLMI, FALU, CPU) or working towards them.
  • Commitment to ongoing education and industry knowledge.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Bilingual abilities (English, French, Cantonese, Mandarin) are assets.
