Job Description

We are seeking a Senior Underwriting Consultant to join our team in Winnipeg or Toronto.

Reporting to the Director of Underwriting - Enterprise, the Senior Underwriting Consultant will be responsible for carrying out the duties of the underwriting function in servicing the specialized needs of a number of large group clients. In this technical role, you will partner with the Single Employer sales and service teams and other stakeholders, including shared service areas and carrier and supplier partners, in delivering tailored solutions and service excellence to our clients.

The Senior Underwriting Consultant will:

  • Maintain a full understanding of the group insurance markets, funding alternatives, networks, and benefit plan options.
  • Work closely with your leader to develop and deliver pre- and post-renewal strategies, supporting the financial requirements of the client.
  • Provide ongoing analytical support, including compiling financial reports, monthly and quarterly utilization, annual renewal reports, market benchmarking reviews, and ad-hoc requests.
  • Monitor and report on clients’ cost/utilization patterns, identifying cost drivers, trends, areas of risk, and other outliers.
  • Review and negotiate renewal rating proposals with carriers and complete the renewal cycle with reporting and commentary.
  • Provide analyses and support on RFPs, amendment pricing, and renewal projections.
  • Assist with the preparation of marketing specifications, review, and prepare cost comparisons of carrier proposals.
  • Establish and maintain positive carrier/vendor relationships for the sustainable collective benefit of our clients.

To be successful as a Senior Underwriting Consultant with People Corporation, you will need:

  • Minimum 5 to 10 years’ experience of increasing responsibility in a related role, such as group benefits underwriting, group benefits consulting, and actuarial consulting.
  • Experience working on large group benefits accounts with complex needs.
  • Post-secondary education in Actuarial Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Finance, Economics, Business Administration, Data Science, or a related field.
  • Strong working knowledge of group insurance products and plan designs.
  • Solid understanding of the various funding arrangements and pricing methodologies.
  • Strong analytical, mathematical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to develop and leverage relationships, both internally and externally with clients.
  • Self-motivated, highly driven, a team player, with the ability to work independently.
  • The ability to prioritize time-sensitive deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
  • A client-centric mindset and outside-the-box thinking to create efficiency around unique client requirements.
  • Continuous improvement of your knowledge in group benefits in an ever-changing environment.

All-star candidates will have:

  • GBA or CEBS designation, LLQP license, and/or Actuarial designation will be an asset.
