Reporting to the VP of Property and Casualty, Canada East, this position is responsible for managing an existing profitable portfolio. The role also involves driving profitable growth through underwriting, sales, marketing, and providing superior service.

The Opportunity :

Join our P&C team in Toronto as an accomplished underwriter with a growth mindset.

What you'll be doing :

• Underwrite, service, and grow a profitable book of business following Markel's underwriting philosophy.
• Partner with underwriters in specialty lines to leverage multi-line opportunities.
• Create and develop broker partnerships to ensure profitable portfolio growth.
• Build and strengthen relationships with broker partners through meetings, events, and conferences.
• Adhere to all underwriting guidelines.
• Draft comprehensive referrals as needed.
• Mentor junior team members on technical underwriting matters.
• Stay informed on market intelligence and industry trends.
• Lead or contribute to projects as required.

Our must haves :

• 5+ years of property and casualty underwriting experience.
• Experience underwriting large, multinational corporations in Property, Primary, and Excess Casualty Lines.
• Manufacturing and/or Construction background is a plus.
• Strong relationship management skills with established broker relationships.
• Proven track record of generating new business premiums.
• Entrepreneurial spirit and innovative thinking.
• University degree; CIP or FCIP designation preferred.
• Deep understanding of policy wordings, forms, and coverages.
• Excellent presentation skills for small and large groups.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
