We are seeking a Senior Underwriter, Property for our Sompo International Canadian team in our Toronto, Ontario office. This position will support our Canadian Domestic platform.

Job Summary

As a Property Underwriter, you will play a critical role in evaluating and analyzing property insurance risks for a wide range of Canadian clients. In this pivotal role, you’ll evaluate and analyze diverse property insurance risks for clients across Canada, crafting tailored insurance solutions to balance risk and exposure with profitability. You’ll be at the forefront of shaping underwriting strategies, working collaboratively with a talented network of stakeholders to drive innovation, profitability, and alignment with our company’s vision.

Duties And Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and underwrite property insurance risks, including conducting risk assessments, analyzing data, reviewing applications, and determining coverage and pricing.
  • Collaborate with brokers and clients to gather information, clarify requirements, and negotiate terms and conditions.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with clients, brokers, and other stakeholders to drive new business opportunities and build a strong book of business.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to junior underwriters, including reviewing their work, providing feedback, and mentoring to ensure quality underwriting decisions.
  • Stay updated with industry trends, regulatory changes, and market conditions to identify potential risks and opportunities.
  • Participate in market analysis, including competitor analysis, rate monitoring, and identifying potential market niches.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, such as claims, risk engineering, and legal, to assess and manage risks, resolve issues, and optimize business outcomes.
  • Provide excellent customer service by promptly responding to inquiries, addressing concerns, and resolving issues in a professional and timely manner.
  • Contribute to the achievement of business targets, including premium growth, profitability, and customer satisfaction.
  • Participate in training, professional development, and knowledge-sharing activities to stay updated with industry best practices and enhance underwriting skills.
  • This is a Toronto based role with a National mandate, so marketing and travel to different regions to meet with our brokers and clients is encouraged.

Qualifications Include

  • Bachelor’s Degree or relevant work experience.
  • 5-7 years of experience in property underwriting, preferably in the Canadian market.
  • Professional designations, such as Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP), CRM, would be an asset
  • Knowledge of property insurance products, coverages, underwriting guidelines, and risk assessment techniques.
  • Ability to analyze data, interpret financial statements, and utilize underwriting tools and software.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact effectively with clients, brokers, and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong negotiation skills with the ability to balance profitability and risk management.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Knowledge of Canadian insurance regulations and market trends.
  • Ability to travel as required
  • French language is an asset
