The Senior Underwriter Role

The Senior Underwriter is responsible for conducting expert credit reviews across the entire suite of Insurance Lending products, including Immediate Financing Arrangements (IFA), CSV Max, and CSV Flex applications. The incumbent will adjudicate complex corporate and personal credit applications while maintaining excellent service levels.

The Work

  • Assess the creditworthiness of both commercial (corporate) and individual borrowers while adhering to the bank's lending guidelines and policies.
  • Provide recommendations and approvals within designated limits, including peer approvals when necessary. Ensure deals close as scheduled and efficiently by following up on outstanding conditions and documents, ensuring compliance with established guidelines.
  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of Whole Life Insurance policies, including their structure, functionality, and the impact of future policy changes on the credit portfolio.
  • Deliver exceptional customer-centric service to internal and external stakeholders; participate in sales meetings as required.
  • Mentor team members on credit adjudication and compliance practices.
  • Actively support team efforts and collaborate with colleagues.
  • Maintain professionalism in all interactions.
  • Support other areas within the Growth Business unit as needed.

  • Post-secondary education in business or finance.
  • In-depth knowledge of commercial underwriting and financial statement analysis.
  • Proficient underwriting skills with 2-4 years of commercial lending experience.
  • Insurance lending experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of whole life insurance products is highly preferred.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess credit applications holistically.
  • Knowledge of AML & ATF practices. Excellent time management skills; able to handle multiple priorities and make decisions under pressure.
  • Ability to thrive in a high-volume, high-intensity environment.
  • Excellent relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to coach and mentor junior employees.
  • Autonomous decision-making on complex files.
  • Knowledge of fraud risks in credit and insurance industries, with the ability to address concerns related to misrepresentation.
  • Willingness to join and grow with a dynamic team and evolving products.
  • Proficiency in MS Office (Word and Excel).
  • CFA / CPA qualifications are assets.
