Job Function:

Working in the CFA Transportation Group, this position in general comprises project and staff management, conceptual planning, assessment, analysis and detailed design and contract document preparation, support during construction and business development/client liaison for transportation infrastructure projects (local and arterial roads, highways, at-grade parking facilities, storm sewers as well as drainage facilities including ditches, swales/culverts etc, sidewalks, multi-use trails and pathways and intersection improvements).

Responsibilities:
  • Carry out and manage all aspects of design for transportation infrastructure projects
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary design teams
  • Provide leadership in the assessment and development of detailed designs for projects involving transportation infrastructure
  • Understand and apply the current design guidelines, criteria and standards (TAC, OPS, MTO, clients’ own, etc.)
  • Develop designs through all design phases, conceptual to detailed designs
  • Analysis, evaluate appropriate design solutions and design of transportation and municipal structures
  • Perform design calculations and documentation for transportation infrastructure projects
  • Supervise, oversee and review calculations and designs performed by less experienced engineers and EITs.
  • Perform Independent Design Check calculations.
  • Develop and administer preparation of construction plans for transportation infrastructure projects
  • Coordinate with and direct CAD production activities for design production.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, tender documents including technical special provisions to accompany construction plans
  • Develop quantity and expected construction cost estimates in support of plan, specification and estimate scopes of work
  • Prepare project schedules and budgets, reports on project status including Earned Value
  • Prepare task project documentation including PMP plan, issues log, risk log, utility matrices, etc.
  • Develop engineering studies, reports and documentation
  • Conduct quality control activities for independent review and checking of designs.
  • Liaise with relevant agency / regulatory approval agencies and adhere to processes pertaining to transportation and municipal engineering projects
  • Liaise with other project stakeholders including the public through public consultation processes and attending public information meetings
  • Interface with clients for project delivery, attend client meetings and presentations
  • Coordination with sub-consultants
  • Lead a project team of engineers including training, development, recruiting and ongoing guidance and mentorship of team.
  • Perform other duties as required.
Business Development:
  • Preparation of proposals for road projects and making client presentations
  • Contribute to the proposal efforts for other related multidiscipline projects
  • Maintain and grow client relationships and attend client functions
  • Develop new opportunities with existing clients
  • Contribute to expanding client base to support company growth
  • Attend industry functions
  • Preparation of and contribute to project and company publications including presentations at industry functions
Qualifications:
  • Civil or Transportation Engineering Degree from an accredited university; PMP certification would be an asset
  • Professional Engineer with P.Eng designation (Ontario)
  • Have demonstrated experience in the area of transportation design engineering with a recognized consulting engineering firm
  • 10 years (minimum) of experience in the design and construction of municipal roads as well as other municipal appurtenances
  • Experience with MEA Class Environmental Assessments
  • Experience in planning, preliminary design and detailed design of transportation infrastructure projects
  • Experience working with government agencies (MTO) and knowledge of MTO Contract Preparation system and being (or eligible to be) MTO RAQS approved is an asset
  • Ability to prepare comprehensive engineering reports and proposals.
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office, industry standard design and analysis software, and AutoCAD, Civil 3D or MicroStation as engineering tools is required
  • Demonstrated abilities to meet project deliverables and requirements; and work within project time frames and budget constraints
  • Ability to work independently and interact well with other staff and mentor junior staff
  • Excellent written / oral communication and interpersonal skills are a necessity
  • Ability to work well with minimal direct supervision and exercise independent judgement and being a “self-starter”
